In 2011 during a visit home my brother told me he invested in some property and was looking for someone to open an eatery in the space. This was meant to be. I left Florida and went to work making my dream come true. With help of family and friends, we opened Deli Sandro's less than a year later. His shop has changed from one room to two, from selling some convenience items and subs to current focus on food --- and it's good food!

Of course, a significant fact is that the storefront was totally converted into a clean and open modern shop from what it was in the past. It has been part of the conversion of S. Plymouth, since the U of R opened its residences down the road.

Now, Deli Sandros will be moving kitty-corner across the street into what was once the Brothers Club. The building has been totally remodeled. The deli will be on the first floor, and there are apartments upstairs. They plan to move by the end of March. In addition to serving the current menu, which has had recent additions, they will offer wings and pizza. There will be more seating, with three times the space.

More exciting news --- in May, Tony will open The Tin Roof at the corner of Jefferson and S. Plymouth. With a rustic Everglades feel, this bar will have a kitchen offering appetizers, and patrons will be able to order from Deli Sandros across the street. Construction has been underway for months, and this appealing attraction will have retractable windows for summer, so you will feel open space as if you are sitting outside. As Tony said, “We did what nobody would expect.”

John and Marian Boutet and Mark Sweetland got an advance look and that is true. With the addition of the garden and museum on the opposite corner, for Legacy Park, honoring black historic members of the community, this intersection is really looking up. So pleased for all the development put into this by Tony and his brother. But I miss seeing Mary in the deli!

The owner, Rosa Peters, operated the Brooks Boutique and Salon here for 7 years before converting it to the RNR Ice Cream Café. Her husband Ron runs a food truck and it made sense to leverage that know-how and suppliers to provide some of the same foods here. The Café has expanded selection to include sandwiches.
Comments: Judging by the foot traffic when I visited around 1 PM on 7/10/14, this is truly the People’s Choice! Mark had to wait in line to ask Van two quick questions, and then five people were lined up behind me! This is the capital for jerk chicken in Rochester! The savory meat melts off the bone, and has been Van’s claim to fame since she first opened in 2001 at 507 Chili across from the bank. She has been in her current location for 2 ½ years, at the corner of Chili and Turner St. This location was most recently Best Place and formerly for years the Turn In Tavern.

On a previous visit, one customer presented an opposing view. “They have the best ox tails in Rochester!” They also have ribs, and a new menu item, pulled pork. Several sides are available for individual purchase for $2.50. People’s Choice Kitchen offers a variety of Caribbean-style foods. Many traditional, some unique.

Van is also involved in catering, especially with musicians coming to town, as evident by the photos surrounding the walls of her place. A native of Bainbridge, Georgia, Van is a grad of East High and attended Bryant and Stratton and RBI, majoring in business. A huge achievement has been as organizer of “Sisters Giving Smiles,” with several hair care salons and spas, to give women living in domestic violence a “day of beauty” for Women’s Place and Liberty Manor Shelters, in honor of her sister.

Her dream for the future is to open a second larger location, possibly in a suburb, to give her fantastic food to those not fortunate to live in our neighborhood!

Comments: Opened June 6, 2013, in the former site of The French Quarter Café. “Dining with a Southern Flare” is their theme, and the food is fantastic! Mark had the best fried haddock sandwich ever tasted, lightly breaded on a hard roll with tomatoes and lettuce, including a side (which was a chef salad too big to finish.) Others when we were there had the breakfast menu. Marian had the fish with grits, Bill a stack of pancakes, and John a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich. Everyone proclaimed they would go back! Mia was our most wonderful waitress. Very broad menu and the house specials look promising. A distinctive strawberry lemonade enjoyed by all, with continuous refills. Very pleasant inside, we were near the large windows looking out on Arnett, so the space well illuminates the numerous paintings by local artist Dunstan Luke. Norman said they are definitely here to stay. This is a must-try!
