"Owing to a sudden commitment, I will not be able to attend the important Southwest Common Council meeting this Thursday. I would like to take this opportunity, however, to refine a suggestion I made earlier during the Southwest Community Action Plan development process.

The "Elevator Speech” for my proposal:

The manufacturing of tiny homes in a new state-of-the art facility in the Bull’s Head Brownfield Opportunity Area by workers acquiring job skills will address housing needs, work skills development and revitalization of neighborhoods blighted by abandoned manufacturing sites and vacant properties.

This bold goal will need significant New York State funding funneled through the City of Rochester to make this happen. With the support of the Southwest Common Council’s neighborhood organizations, we can present this as a unified goal for Mayor Warren to consider. It ties in with her long-term goal to deal with the root causes of poverty including lack of truly affordable housing, joblessness, under-performing schools and decaying neighborhoods.

It has been the practice of Governor Cuomo to make grand economic development gestures related to Finger Lakes area redevelopment. Examples in Rochester include support for photonics, energy-related projects at Eastman Park and ROC the Riverway initiative. It is time now for the Southwest Action Plan to set the stage for the manufacture and installation of tiny homes as a future candidate for funding. It will take time and commitment plus a vehicle like the Bull’s Head Brownfield redevelopment process to make this possible.

I ask that you include the input from this letter within the content of the Thursday SWCC meeting dealing with the Southwest Action Plan.

Thank you and best wishes for the Holidays.
