19th Ward Community Cats- 2019
This all volunteer group, was very busy this year. We began our Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Release(TNVR) in March and finally slowed down in December. We found 3 large colonies, thanks to concerned neighbors, and worked together with the caretakers of these colonies to get each cat either TNVR’d or adopted . These cats are often cats that were once pets, and left behind when owners moved. They become frightened and afraid of people. If their kittens are not around humans they become feral. Our group is trying to break this cylcle. Please help our community by NEVER leaving a cat behind when you move. These cats suffer, starve and do not do well surviving our cold weather. They cannot fend for themselves and cannot possibly hunt enough to survive.
In 2019 we spayed/neutered 68 feral cats throughout the entire 19th ward. Rochester Community Animal Clinic and Lollypop Farm provide the appointments for us. Feral cats were returned to safe locations where they are cared for. We spent long hours, sometimes entire weeks, trying to trap kittens. Once trapped, our volunteers foster and socialize them making them ready for adoption. Some wonderful rescue groups have partnered with us to find homes for the kittens and friendly adult cats. These include Kitten Korner, Four Legged Friends, Animal Service League, Rescued Treasures, and Pet Pride. We took 41 kittens and friendly strays off the streets and adopted them into safe homes, with the recue groups’ support. These groups and more are resources for the entire community. Rochester Animal Services(Verona Street Animal Shelter) offers low income spay and neuter for pets. Our volunteers have assisted several neighbors in making those appointments and transporting the cats to the appointments for owners with no transportation.
Our group needs volunteers for transportation, fostering, trapping, laundry, fund raising and much more. Please call 585-709-6229 if you wish to volunteer. For more tips related to cats, finding kittens and resources please see our web site 19wca.org/cats. Donations are tax deductible and checks can be made out to 19th Ward Community Association with “cats” written in memo and sent to the 19th Ward Community Association, 216 Thurston Road, Rochester, NY 14619. We have 2 cats waiting for their furr- ever homes. Ridley is one year old(female) and Ramone is a 2 years old ginger male. Both have very sweet personalities. Contact 585-709-6229 to set up meeting them!
