D & L Tropical Groceries, 1005 Genesee Street, Rochester NY 14611
Owner: Linford Hamilton
Specialties: Jamaican take-out, African, Cajun, Caribbean foods and spices
Comments: D&L Groceries specializes in African, Cajun, and Caribbean foods. These tastes are a blend of old European and African cultures. Owner Linford Hamilton notes their customers include some from the neighborhood, but that many come from other areas to shop at their store. They have excellent beef patties and baked good specialties. People come from Syracuse, Buffalo, Corning and other upstate areas for African spices. German beers go well with these flavors and D&L offers them too.
Plans are moving ahead for a new grocery store near St. Monica’s church. This larger store will include more table space for customers to enjoy their breakfast, lunch and dinner specialties.
Linford and Dolores Hamilton were recipients of the 2006 of 19th WCA Merchant of the Year award.
Linford shows Mark Sweetland through the produce area.
The Hard Dough Bread is popular in the in the Caribbean. I see they also carry Whole Wheat bread by the same Golden Crust Caribbean Bakery.
I have used D & L in the past to cater luncheons during Black History Month and the guests just raved about the food!!
They also used to carry some delicious ginger ice cream.
