Minutes of the April 3rd, 2018 meeting of

The 19th Ward Community Association Schools Committee

Attendees: Dan Ross, John Laing, John Boutet, Sarah Yaworski, Lee Loomis, Antonio Alvarado and Jacob Wheeler

March minutes

Spelling Bee

School and fraternity coordinators have completed their order forms for t-shirts, meeting the deadline. The next need for data is for the bus to U of R. After that there is a deadline of April 13 for names of students and contributors for the program. This data will come through John L and then to Antonio.

We gave small word game cubes, pencils, pens, erasers and a voucher for a bicycle from RCommunity Bikes to Antonio and Jacob for placing in the momento bags. We will need about 65 bags.

Lee suggested that we work with U of R publicity to use pictures of the bee in their publicity. We also need to contact RCSD to have them feature the Bee in their good news section.

School 16 Status

Windows are being installed, a definite sign of progress. We will be meeting with school board member Beatriz LeBron at 6:30 pm on the 17th. Dan will start the meeting by referring to our document, and the three major points: we want 16 to evolve to a neighborhood based community school, needs of today’s parents for all day care (extended school day, before and after school child care, universal bussing, etc.) must be met, and it needs to include a solution to the dearth of preschool programs in the 19th ward . We need to check for overlap of our priorities and hers, as she is new to the board. John B has posted a video of Natalie Sheppard’s talk at the last board meeting to get a feel for her positions.

School 44 Status

Nothing will change for school 44 through school year 2018-19. Any change in future years will be communicated later this spring. School age population data will be required input to the long term strategy.

School 29 Status

Joe had a conflict. School 29 held their internal Spelling Bee officiated by fraternity brothers with the principal and other students in attendance.

School 10 Status

School 10 held a communication meeting on the move to the Marshall campus which they will share with school #2. The portables will be removed, and a new classroom wing and gym will be added. More information is available at www.RSMPNews.net.

Old/New Business
