In the 19th Ward, City of Rochester is starting work on two bike boulevard projects, and now is your chance to ask officials to make your streets safer. Contact Mike Bulger, Healthy Communities Project Coordinator for Healthi Kids, to learn more about these projects and what you can do as a resident to make your streets safer for all!

About 5 months ago, the promo video for Conkey Cruisers was posted in the Positively Southwest Rochester FB group and it was commented that we should have something like this in our neighborhood. https://www.facebook.com/groups/Southwestgoodnews/permalink/791999930859011/

I said and say, why not, but let’s start simple. Say, with a bike ride.

I said and say, why not, but let’s start simple. Say, with a bike ride.

I have given this a little thought.

The ride could be a single ride or the start of a regular ride. If regular, high frequency would avoid making continuing advertising a necessity.

It could be conducted on the Erie Canal Trail portion west of GVP or on a portion of the Genesee River Trial. Alternately, it could follow the proposed bike boulevard route if it were an adult-only ride.

It could be conducted during Bike Week, between May 11th and 15th, as part of the week’s festivities. This has the advantage of some likelihood of press.

It would require some ride marshals, more if on the street than if on trail.

People who wish to participate may need repairs. A few mechanically inclined individuals with tools could be corralled into doing this the day of the event, including me. Alternately, we could pursue R Community Bikes to provide this service once. Finally, we could wait to have the initial ride until after June 9th, when the Westside Market starts back up and RCB is already doing repairs there.

Promotional work should connect with the community. Much of the point is to get them to ride. If there is any concern they may have, we should try to predict and address it.

Here is a little inspiration to get ideas flowing:

Conkey Cruisers

I recognize by being responsible for the resurfacing of this idea that I am probably taking on some of the responsibility. I am alright with that currently, but I am typically not the most charismatic promoter or ride leader.

Thoughts? Could this work? Would anyone like to assist in doing this?
Bike programs for neighborhood schoolstag:location19.org,2013-01-22:2047650:Topic:637352013-01-22T19:25:23.765ZJohn Boutethttps://location19.org/profile/JohnBoutet

With all the talk about saving neighborhood schools and the cost and damage of busing kids all over the city, this is a good time for the biking community to conceive ways to make use of bikes to help solve some problems with schools.

For example:

install secure bike rack

teach bike safety

provide bike repair service and lessons

require bike helmets and reflectors for kids biking to school

Hi,

We bought the boys their Christmas presents early. Very good bikes and helmets. (David is enjoying biking home from McQuaid, rather than having to wait 2 hours for a ride from one of us.) We have 3 or 4 bikes to donate. I know that there used to be someone at the Farmers Market during the summer. Can someone send me information? I had a fantasy of parking in the garage this winter, ha, ha.

Thanks,
