Is anybody up for doing the R.A.R.E. Rally Short Ride Saturday?  It is a delightful ride and anyone in halfway decent biking shape should not have a problem with it.  It starts at 10 AM in the Ontario Beach north parking lot, not far from the merry-go-round.  The climb is mostly between Turning Point Park and Lake Ave. and is a steady gentle grade along a shaded bike path.   After lunch at the Dinosaur BBQ it is a flat ride south along the Genesee River bike path to the Erie Canal bike trail west to Lee Road where we head north to Ridge Road West.   There we catch a bike path that takes us back down to lake level.  The weather forecast for Saturday is partly cloudy, 79 deg. with 15% RH.  Can't ask for more than that.

I was out exercising the dogs in the neighborhood with my trike this evening and talked to Desmond Jackson who had done the Tour de Cure today with other neighbors on Aberdeen.  Sounds like we have folks who may be interested in doing part or all of the R.A.R.E. Rally ride on June 23rd, 2012.  The Long Ride starts at 8:00am in the main parking-lot at Hamlin Beach State Park and follows Map-1 to reach Ontario Beach Park in Charlotte before the 10:00am Short Ride start.   The Short Ride follows Map-2 to the Dinosaur Barbeque for lunch.  For those who want to put in some extra mile there is the Irondequoit loop option which can be added in just after starting the Short Ride to add about 12 miles to the ride before getting back onto the Short Ride loop to downtown and lunch.  To get there we go through Turning Point Park and cross the river twice to get a great view of the lower fall at Driving Park and the upper falls from the Pont de Rennes (Platt St.) bridge.

After lunch, the ride continues and goes past Corn Hill along the east side of the Genesee River.  We cross the Ford Street bridge and continue down on the west side river bike path in PLEX.  We cross back over the river at the Brooks Landing pedestrian bridge to pedal along the U of R river path to Genesee Valley Park.  In the Park we cross the Genesee River again and then cross Erie Canal to follow the canal bike path around the south and west sides of the 19th Ward.  We leave the canal path at Lee Road which we follow north to Latona on which we continue  until Ridge Road West.  At Ridge Road we connect with a nice bike path that takes us all the way north to the Ontario Beach Parkway bike path which we follow east to bet back to the Ontario Beach Short Ride start and finish point.

From there, the long ride group continues on taking the Map-3 route back to the Hamlin Beach start point.  For those that want to get in over 100 miles they can add the Kendall loop to the end of the ride. I managed to get all 5 sections in the year before last and lived to talk about it.

For people starting from the SW Quadrant and planing to do only the short ride, an option is to set out from home on your bike around 8:00am.  Connect with the canal bike path at the closest road crossing, and pedal up to the 10:00am start point at Ontario Beach where you can hookup with other riders.

The annual R.A.R.E. Rally is coming up on June 23.  I will have to settle for the short ride this year... I'm completely out of shape.
