MOTHER'S DAY GARLIC FROLIC AT RAPIDS CEMETERY

Treat your Mom or Grandma to a unique Mother's Day outing this year. The Civil War era Rapids Cemetery is holding it's first Garlic Frolic this Sunday, May 14, from 1-3:00 pm

The thing is, there is a massive colony of a couple of types of wild garlic growing on part of the cemetery grounds (not where any graves are located). It all needs to be removed so flowers and lawn can be planted, and we have two choices. The first is to pay someone to dig it up and haul it away. The second is for garlic lovers to come and dig it up, take it home, and eat it.

If you're one of the latter, get some shovels and bags and come on down. The cemetery is at 90 Congress Avenue, close to the Plymouth Avenue end of the street. (See the red dot on the map). If you have any perennials from your own garden that you'd like to share, bring them along; Bleeding Hearts and Forget-Me-Nots are especially appreciated because Civil War Veterans are interred there.

    OK, Marian, if it's a frolic, everyone should wear red white and blue, and you should have music playing.  Dancing on the sidewalk after you dig?

      I got a bagful Sunday, and sampled that night.  Heard reports that they were hot.  Could be, if you eat raw, but I sautéed in olive oil.  Very mild.  I looked on Google and found reports on this, and they are viewed as a special Spring treat by some. 

      Impressed by the work done to date.  John C. is doing a fantastic job in restoring this historic area along with volunteers.  It is hard and time-consuming work to gain back even a few yards due to the underbrush, and invasive plants such as the wild garlic.  And the weeds.  Please volunteer to help on the second and fourth Sundays from 1-3 PM if you can.  Such tremendous achievements have been made since I visited last summer.  This is a very worthy effort, important to the City of Rochester and the 19th Ward.
