Lee Loomis School #10 Volunteer Tutor, leeloomis46@gmail.com

Tutoring

  • All tutor volunteers must be vetted by Ricky Frasier at Central Office; Lee concerned that many tutors for School #10 may not want to be in a setting with unvaccinated students. Have had some experience with Zoom because of COVID and would be able to start that up again. Always better for this interaction to be in person.

  • Having trouble connecting with Ms. Thomas, new principal, to clarify the volunteer requirements; understand that the work of starting school is very busy right now; disappointed in the delay and not sure what the screening of volunteers will consist of.

  • Higher need at this point is for volunteers who could walk students to school.

Busing

  • Rotary SW, 19thWCA & School #29 are planning a bus driver greeting/recognition event to show appreciation. The plan was to have them show up at the 19th Ward Association Office for donuts, etc.

  • School #17 also looking for volunteers to help students walk to school.

  • Phyllis recommends asking for Walking School Bus volunteers for both #17 & #10. She is connecting with Dan Drmacich (RCPE) and Karen Emerson (19WCA) to explore this idea.

Education Committee Membership

  • Sandra J. Simon, City-Director Special Projects - Education, contacted us to say she was unavailable to make tonight’s Education meeting.

  • John also reached out to Malik Evans. He could not make it tonight but asked for the dates of future meetings.

  • No mention of Child Safety Zones to date this month.

  • Mayor and Superintendent may be distracted with recent legal charges.

Rochester Coalition for Public Education (RCPE)

  • Raising awareness around race issues both locally and nationally.

  • RCPE meets this Friday at 4pm - 5:30; Howard Maffucci sends out the Zoom invitationsmeeting.

  • Phyillis reported that RCPE found RASE site that allows for community input on their recommendations; can sign up to work on one of the recommendations. RCPE is signing up for the recommendation to find alternative ways to test and evaluate our children. Phyllis is recommending that the 19WCA identify and work on recommendations as well. This is an attempt to break down the silos as we move forward.

  • Peter McWalters (past RCSD Superintendent) has maintained a connection with RCPE.

Public Safety Meeting @ Flint Street

  • Anti-police sentiment has resulted in more retirements.

  • They are having difficulty recruiting new officers, especially minority candidates.
