June minutes Approved

School 16 schedule

Our discussion ranged from the renovation schedule outlook and the implications of the impacts of being late to the desirability of neighborhood and community schools to middle school strategies and state compensation for busing. A distillation of the discussion came down to the question “what do we want for our children”. A summary statement was “children have a clear path from preK through 12 within their neighborhood”. Dan and Sarah agreed to flesh out this statement into a document that we can use to communicate our position

School 44 status

The strategy for school 44 has been discussed at the Superintendent cabinet meeting and we await the results.

Spelling Bee

The budget for 2018 was discussed and some modifications incorporated.

When school 16 returns to Post Ave and a preK-6 configuration it will leave school 19 as the only school with 7 and 8 students. At that point we can decide to limit the spelling bee to grades 3-6 or add 7 and 8 from a different school such as Wilson Academy.

I’m working with the Community Foundation to have an event for the first spelling bee winners.

Uses for community space at school 16

We brainstormed uses and sources for the community space at school 16 with the following opportunities: literacy volunteers, parent ed, CASH (income tax), satellite classroom, Police Athletic League, community groups unable to use the library now, pre and after school care (YMCA, Boys and Girls club, etc)
