Minutes of the June 14th, 2017 meeting of

The 19th Ward Community Association Schools Committee

Attendees: John Boutet, John Laing, Jay Ross, Mary Adams

Guests: Andrea Larkin-Brown, Valarie Johnson

May minutes Approved

Spelling Bee Wrap-Up

Still waiting for one bill (t-shirts). Two of the schools (29 and 10) used their funding from us to have a celebration with spelling bee participants and sent me some pictures.

School 16 status

Work is proceeding on the renovation.

School 44 status

School 44 is slated to close after the 2017-18 school year, and the building will be used for swing space for school 10. The plan is to forge a neighborhood school using children presently at schools 16 and 44 with priority given to those in close proximity to school 16. This will require a great deal of communication starting now so every one has a clear understanding of the situation. Andrea has a community project to address this issue as part of her Parent Leadership Training Institute. Her proposal is attached. There was a consensus that we would support her initiative.

Square Fair feedback

The laminated drawings of the building, both the external look and the room configuration were effective in discussing the project to people at Square Fair. 9 people volunteered and their names will be forwarded to Ricky Frazier so they can go through orientation this summer. Jay shared a thank you note from a student prompted a discussion as to how to use this and others as a volunteer recruitment.

School 29 Status

Work is proceeding on the community garden at the school

New Business

Valarie Johnson has been working the space issue at the Wilson Foundation Academy (Madison). In particular the proposal to move the Early College students to the Charlotte campus was not supported. We agreed that a note would be sent to the superintendent and the board expressing our opposition to this move. Her package is attached as well
