Minutes of the September 13th, 2017 meeting of

The 19th Ward Community Association Schools Committee

Attendees: John Boutet, Dan Ross, Jay Ross, John Laing, Sarah Yaworski,

August minutes Approved

Change in Meeting Date

There is the potential to recruit a new committee member if we change our meeting day to Tuesday or Thursday. Tuesdays were acceptable and we agreed to change to the first Tuesday of the month. Thus the next meeting will be October 3rd.

Primary Election Results

Malik Evans was one of the five successful candidates for city council so he will likely resign from the school board. In that case the commissioners will choose the successor, or if they can’t come to agreement the decision will fall to the board president.

Discussion of plans for the year

Using our document as a guide, we discussed our activities for the year. First off we decided to share the document with the Superintendant and the board to get their input. I was to invite the Superintendent to a community meeting (in many ways a follow-up to her listening tour last year) where we would strive to have community input on the issues we identified in our document. The school assignments for the board members are as follows: Willa Powell 16, 29, and 44; Malik Evans both Wilson’s and Early College; and Cynthia Elliot 10

To be able to construct paths through middle and high school we will need the involvement of people associated with the two Wilson’s. Dan was to ask some Wilson parents for advice on what would be important to them. In addition we need to recruit younger residents to provide working knowledge of the schools as they are now.

Volunteers

Sarah’s husband will volunteer as his employer is providing time for volunteer activities. We discussed having a focus on grades K-3 to hopefully impact the standard scores so that people may be encouraged enough to stay in the city. We need information on the initiative of the district so that we can fold into that.

Old/New Business

John B attended the Building Advisory Committee meeting at school 10 and they are proposing a section of the building (gym and cafeteria) that can be used as a rec center.

Next Meeting

Tuesday October 3rd at 7 pm in the 19th Ward Community Association office.
