The Education Committee had a table at the Friday Nov. 16  19WCA convention to review the issues involved in the current school renovation, consolidation, and closing discussions the RCSD is having with the community.  The Superintendent currently recommends keeping School #16 on Post Avenue closed, leaving the relocated students and staff at Freddie Thomas where it has been relocated.  He also recommends closing School #10 and moving its students and program to School #1.

An alternative plan Dr. Vargas has proposed, given the resistance voiced in the 19th Ward to losing our neighborhood schools, is to combine Schools #10, #16 and #44 into a new K-8 school that would be built the 19th Ward.  This school would need room for over 900 students.

Education Committee members including two teachers from school 16 were at the table to  discuss the issues with interested parents and community members and to take in their opinions.

People were encouraged to come to the 19WCA Community School Meeting, Monday November 19 at 6:00pm in the Arnett Branch Library, 311 Arnett Blvd.

The poster display covered many of the issues to be discussed:

To make the schools successful in our modern day urban neighborhoods where the single parent or both parents work, we believe it is necessary for all schools to have the following.
