SW Education Committee / 19WCA Schools Committee Transition Planing, Tuesday May 14, 2013 Meeting at Arnett Library

The Meeting convened at 6:05 pm.

Present: John Boutet, Mary DeRouen, Kathy King, John Laing, Cam Mossgraber, Betsy Romson, Chojy Schroeder, Nana Maasai Sonekai, Marlene Sutliff, Sarah Yaworsky

The objective of this meeting was to discuss the formation to the 19WCA Schools Committee and what its function would be.  We also addressed what the continued function of the Education Committee might be.

Since our August 13, 2012 Meeting at which Ralph Spezio and Luis Aponte reviewed the Community Accredited Schools Model we knew the need to revitalize the 19WCA Schools Committee was coming if we wanted to pursue that model for School 16.  We need a group that represents only the immediate neighborhood of the schools for that purpose.  A SW Common Council group is too broad.

During the preceding month the 19WCA Executive Committee and Delegates Council had agreed to reactivate the Schools Committee.  Sarah Yaworsky had been asked to write a mission statement for the committee and the Association President had appointed John Laing to Chair the committee.  For this committee the Chair would select members who could make the needed commitment.

John Laing reviewed his plans for the 19WCA Schools Committee and indicated he was looking to form a 5 to 10 member committee.  He would be selecting members during the coming weeks.  Members would need to be 19th Ward residents.  He is planning on having meetings the second week of the month.  John then read the Mission Statement that Sarah had written. The Delegates Council had approved the statement Thursday May 9th.

John Boutet then reviewed what he saw as the continuing function of the SWCC Education Committee.

  • It would be working with the other neighborhoods associations to get them more involved with their schools to avert future issues in other schools of the SW Quadrant.
  • It would stand ready to work with the 19WCA Schools Committee or other neighborhood committees to lobby the RCSD as need arises.
  • It would work at recruiting volunteers to work in the schools.

Whether it continues to meet on a monthly basis will depend on participation and need.

The meeting adjourned at 7:20pm.
