19th Ward Spelling Bee

  • Happened 4/18 at UR’s Hoyt Hall; 5 schools competed; first tie ever. School #16 and School #10 contestants went through all of the 100 words. Awards are $500 for each. About seventy children participated. The first awardee is graduating high school this year.

Square Fair School Table Participation

  • We will have a presence at Square Fair 6/3 (starts at 8:30 a.m. and goes till about 4:30 p.m. There will also be room for Location.SW.org. There are also other groups with whom we might be able to share tables and coverage. John L. recommended having good visuals so people can see what is proposed.

  • Should we have “buttons” that brings awareness to the neighborhood schools? i.e., “I attended School #16” or #29, etc.

  • Have someone who collects names for a School #16 waiting list.

  • Solicit volunteers for schools.

  • Recommendation that “violence” be addressed via a booth at the festival; police officers? Pathways to Peace? Opportunity to see RPD in a friendly situation, passing out information and building relationships; would also provide security for the event.

  • John B. asked for volunteers to help at Square Fair.

School 10 - Update

  • Have had 50 teachers outside of School #10 apply to teach there because of the type of instruction provided (Expeditiary).

  • RCSD Website offers a lot of information on individual schools (i.e. their budgets, headcount, ELA and Math scores, etc.)

School 16 - Update

  • John B. had an opportunity yesterday to share with Dana Miller the proposal to have a community center at School #16 at his campaign fundraiser at Brue Coffee. A little over two weeks earlier this information was presented to Lovely Warren with the message that we need to find funding for staffing the Community Center for after-school use.

School #29

  • Garden was set up last year at Kenwood & Kirkland by School #29, City, John & Marian Boutet. A Little Free Library was installed in the garden. Rotary Club has taken over to help sustain the garden. Blocks & Bloom Group established on Kenwood.

  • Now exploring vegetable garden with Foodlink. Hoping to have some straw bale gardens in one of the parking lots. John McMahon from the NSC Office has been very helpful.

School 44 - Update

  • Beverly unable to make this meeting to report on School 44 because her daughter went into labor tonight.

Walk-in Items

  • Cecilia Golden is running for School Board. Very active with the school system in the past and has held some non-profit CEO jobs. Currently in charge of about 6 schools that are affiliated with Hillside.

  • RocSOUP is this Saturday, 4/29, from 4-7 at Phillis Wheatley Library. Four presenters will vie for what could be a $1,000 cash award. Dinner and a chance to vote for your favorite project costs $5. Singer The Divine Ms. B will provide entertainment.

  • All YMCA’s doing Kid Family Day 4/29, SW is 10-2; Monroe and Maplewood is 1-4. Free membership for a day so people can learn about social interaction, nutrition, play, etc. It was noted how much of a deficit the YMCA leaves regarding services in the SouthWest.

Note that later that evening I received this note from Travis Miller:

Mr. Boutet and Mr. Laing,

As a FYI, attached is the dual-language flyer announcement that RSMP has begun distributing to residents in the 1-2 block neighborhood perimeter of School 16. This will also be shared digitally with your fellow peers on the School 16 Building Advisory Committee and we encourage you to forward to members of the SWCC. Thank you.
