In 2008 we saw people turn out to vote in droves—bringing us the first African American in our great Nation’s history. Contrary to popular belief, the importance of voting this year is equal to if not greater than in 2008. But if history is any indication, very few people will come out to vote this year.

We’ve all seen the news story about rampant corruption in the Monroe County Administration and County Republican Party, the patronage appointment of a Public Defender and the so-called F.A.I.R. plan, but despite these issues, for whatever reason, voters act as if local government is the least important. This could not be further from the truth.

The Monroe County Legislature is responsible for overseeing Monroe Community College, the Sheriff, Water Authority, Public Defender, Town Governments, Social Services, and the list goes on. These functions impact people on a daily basis in very important ways and they are each governed by our County Government.

This year—despite their internal turmoil—we think the Republican Party has devised a scheme to suppress minority voter turnout in the City of Rochester. As I’m sure many already know the GOP chose not to run any candidates for Rochester Mayor, City Council or School Board. Of course Democrats have an overwhelming voter registration advantage in Rochester, but still I just can’t believe there isn’t even one Republican in Rochester willing to run for office.

If true that the GOP wants to suppress minority turnout, the next question is: Why would they do this? Well that’s easy: Republicans could want a big suburban turnout and a low City turnout so they can hold onto the Sheriff’s Office and take over a seat on the County Court. We simply can’t let this happen.

Not only am I asking my brothers and sisters to vote this November 3rd, I am asking you do whatever you can to make sure as many of your friends and family vote as possible. Every voter, regardless of their political party, must vote in these critical local years so that a powerful and well organized group of insiders isn’t allowed to manipulate election results.

For information on how you can help, please call the Monroe County Democratic Committee at 232-2410 or check the phone book for your preferred party.

Willie-
I very much appreciate the reminder to get out and vote - it's an important RIGHT for all US Citizens to exercise. That said, I do get concerned when political infighting occurs and in the past week I've seen plenty of it on both 'sides of the fence'. If anyone is truly trying to suppress 'minority turnout' I'd like to hear more of the facts around that.
This is coming from my speculations and conversations with MCDC...It makes alot of sense...Do the Math...I am simply trying to encourage people that even though they may live in the City we can make a difference in County races...Simply get involved...Poll watching, driving people to polls, phone bank etc...This is going to be a historical election for Dem...very exciting stuff...Thanks
I am not looking for anyone to rescue us. I am saying the County should have a greater role. Thanks for your comments and I am available anytime to talk to anyone concerning any issue in our community. Just call me at 585-737-6152 or email me at wlightfo@rochester.rr.com. Thank You
