Springing off from a discussion on the Yahoo Group and from a discussion here. Shopping in the 19th Ward. What's hot, what's not. Where are the best buys. Where's the best pizza, Spanish food? Have you tried the food at D & L's. Where's the best place to buy milk? coffee? cleaning supplies? Christmas presents? What stops you from shopping in the neighborhood. What excites you about shopping in the neighborhood. How many local merchants do you know by name? Any body know of local coupons, for our local stores.

With the Luminary Evening coming up, we all have a reason to park on Thurston Road and march into Hunts. While there buy some batteries, or cleaning supplies. Don;t recycle that kit from 5 years ago, spend some a "wad in the ward". Someone please come up with a better slogan than that!!! How about making this a forum group for people to share shopping stories or great buys and finds in the SW part of the city.

Dan, great discussion - we shop at Hunts - just got a storm window repaired there in November. I also shopped at the Kingdom Ventures, and several of the Jamaican stores in the neighborhood. - I absolutely love Jamaican patties ( D & L is one of the places I've visited)! Tops is my place for my turn for parish hospitality treats!
Wendy, is D&L the place on Genesee STreet near Brooks. I see a place there and wondered about it.
yes - it is great!
Thanks for joining in the discussion Wendy. The patty's at D&L are great. There's an app on IPHONE called Urban Spoon. It searches for restaurants near your current location. From my house there are 38 restaurants listed less than 1.1 miles from my house, that does not include Campi's where I had a delicious gyro yesterday which is 1.1 miles from my house. It does include Boudler .6 mi, Holley's .6 mi, Menezes .6 mi, and D&L .6 mi. But that leaves a lot of restaurants.

So with Rite Aid, when your out of milk, where are people running out to.?
Cutaia's on Chili is a good place to go if out of milk, or for meat.
Yes, Sheri, and I have walked PAC-TAC there many times, with some of our neighbors. Georgia lives just a bit down the street, and have walked with her, and officers, and as Georgia will tell you, most of the people are quite friendly. Yes there have been problems but nothing ongoing.

Cutaia's has been around for many years. It was originally primarily a meat market, but now they have everything. The owners are great people, very friendly, and supportive of the 19th Ward. They donated hot dogs for two neighborhood corner cookouts last summer.

They have a parking lot to the left of the building as you travel west on Chili from Thurston. Strongly urge all to support this local grocery!
Cutaia' also donated the sausage for the fundraiser for the Trafalgar fire folks. We definitely need to support them!
I have been there doing PACTAC as well, and will now try to stop by for milk and other odds and ends. I always think of them more for meat, and we buy most of that at the Public Market from either 7 Bridges Farm or from Heiden Farms.
Mise En Place in the South Wedge is a great place- it's a combination small grocery store and restaurant. You can order at the counter and take out or order and they'll serve you in the sit down area. The grocery store stocks some very decent fresh produce, meats and basic grocery items along with some specialty foods. The food that they prepare/serve is very, very good and reasonably priced given the quality.
Creator's Hands at High Falls was a great place to shop on Arnett and worth driving downtown to shop since they relocated.
Boulder had decent food although they're still pretty slow in preparing it and if you're dining with more than one other person you don't all get your food at the same time.
Mise En Place is a great place. In the nice weather when I am biking back and forth to work, I often stop there. Years ago, Angelo's on Thurston used to have decent vegetables, but that was with different owners. I haven't been in recently. There is of course Tops on West Ave.

I haven't had a chance to stop by MJ's Daily Bread yet, but hear the food is very good, anybody been there yet?
Thanks for bringing this topic Dan, yea, I agree it could be a forum for ongoing feedback. I ahve lived here only one year, and I am always looking for some good eateries in the 19th. I have tried a few places in the 19th and often find the quality of the food to be irratic. But I am willing to keep trying.

I will try Holly's for breakfast one day, though I admit to loving the South Wedge Diner (obviously not the 19th). Holly's supper was so-so (or was it lunch?).

I gave up on Unkl Moe's after two great suppers and three bad ones where the quality obviously slipped...cold canned yams, yuk.

Boulder does have good Paninni's, but slow service and weak coffee (of all things!); and their music is often too loud, which strains conversation. And they don't seemed intereseted in neighborhood feedback. It's all about an environ for students (or their staff) re the music style and volume. Plus I wanted my coffee hot and with my meal and the server had the nerve to say I should take it with me now and she did not want to make two trips to carry stuff! They are understaffed at certain times (most times?).

I look forward to hearing from others.

As for TOPS on West Avenue, they don't keep it very clean and sometimes the entrance is down right disgusting.....so I have stopped going there. Let me know if that changes. Frankly they would never allow that at their Brighton store (clinton Av S.)

I tried Wegman at Lyell once, Google says its closer than Hylan Drive. I like the Weggies...but prefer closer.

And of course we have the lovely farmer's markets..Union Street -12 mos (Tu,th sat) St. Monica's (Tu-summer-fall) and South Wedge (Wed, summer-fall) and the Winter Market to Dec.

I love Home Depot for household stuff...either Jefferson or the westside one.
Hi all,
I tried to go for a Fish Fry at Bigg Mouths on 1/8/10 and to my shock found it closed. We were there just before Christmas. What happened? I'm very disappointed. They had very good Fish Frys...lots of food for a reasonable price.
