The 19th Ward prides itself on its efforts to be inclusive. To welcome all to the table and it's residents and groups officially and unofficially organizes many events to that end. The dates we select for events can automatically become an unintended barrier to participation by some interest groups.

Today I saw the lovely invitation to 19th warders for the St. Stephen's church "New Orleans Jazz Dinner" on September 18, 2010. It sounds like a great event and I am interested in going....then I noticed that it is scheduled on Yom Kippur, the highest holy day for religious Jews (akin to Easter or Christmas in sacredness for Christians). Jews traditionally observe this holy day with a 25-hour period of fasting and intensive prayer, often spending most of the day in synagogue services. I suspect that some Jews would like to go the the Jazz Dinner...if it wasn't on Yom Kippur; or to at least be able to consider going.

My note is only meant to encourage us to be aware of such major dates/events when we schedule something we would like our community to participate in....maybe next year this event can be on another day....

Good point MacClurg - scheduling anything these days always seems to involve some 'conflict' with other EVENTS but I think that your message about the need to be aware of significant holy days and/or holidays is important. I imagine that most of us would never consider scheduling a community event on Christmas or Thanksgiving - we'd likely say something to the effect of "well people won't attend _______ as they will be with their loved ones on that day". Being mindful of the "less obvious" (to some) important days would be part of a more conscious effort. Perhaps it's not too late for the New Orleans Jazz Dinner to change the date. Your reminder is also a good one for me to download a list of various holidays to my e-calendar!
thank you Margy for your thoughtful response....Warm regards, MacClurg
Scheduling fundraisers is challenging - we're sorry this doesn't work well for everyone. Maybe next year, there won't be the same conflict.
