Keep an eye on your and your neighbors mailboxes!

I just receive a note from a friend on Arnett with this warning:

Oh, keep an eye on yours and your neighbors mailboxes! My neice Jessica heard my mailbox opening last Thursday around 3:30. She looked out her bedroom windown and saw a heavy set African American woman with her hand in my mailbox. It looked like she took some mail OUT of my box. Jessica came running down stairs and when she opened the door, the lady was already out on the side walk going toward Post Ave. Jessica ran out of the house barefoot and yelled to the woman, "Hey, what were you taking out of my mailbox! Bring that mail back here!" The lady ignored Jessica until Jessica had called out 3 times. The lady then turned back and shouted, "I didn't take anything out of your mailbox!" Jessica yelled back and said, "I SAW you take stuff outta my mailbox and you better bring it back NOW!" The lady started walking faster and then turned south onto Post (like she was going toward School 16). Jessica called the police, but when they got there 30 minutes later, no one that matched that description was in site. I do have a lock on my mailbox, but I haven't used it in a while... but I am now! I just find it hard to believe someone would be that nervy! But, there were no cars in the driveway so she probably felt safe doing it. If Jessica hadn't heard / seen it, I'd have never known!

Be sure to call 911 if you see something and let Off. Kristin Runyon know (428-7635) at the NSC office. It is probably a good idea to call the post office also.

Thanks for sharing this John! I absolutely hate the fact that we have to be so careful about watching our homes, cars, possessions ... and now, our mailboxes!!! My guess is that the thief knows that many people receive social security checks on the 3rd of the month.
I know that Christmas time is prime time for robbers to look for opportunities to steal stuff. In the past, Kristen has recommended keeping shades down at night and keeping gifts, etc out of site. I'd also recommend that if people get a brand new big screen TV or other 'big box' item that people not advertise it by putting the box on the curb!
Speaking of mailboxes and mail delivery, Marlborough has had a new mail carrier for about a year now - this FINALLY occurred after multiple complaints about our previous carrier who seemed to not be very interested in the customer service aspect of mail delivery. Interestingly, with our new carrier, we are now (again) inundated with a TON of mail and we get it ON TIME!

It certainly make a a good case for direct deposit for things such as SS checks. Glad to hear you have a good carrier again Margy. The gal who has been delivering our mail for the past year has been top notch also.

I had one of those door mail slots installed, the one with the hinged door so the mail gets deposited directly into the house. It works for me, because I have a seperate foyer. It has the added benefit of when I am away on vacation, etc. there is not a pile of mail sitting there advertising that I am away, and I don't have to make a trip to the post office to stop/start my mail delivery.
