A year or so ago one of the members of Marlborough Road Neighbors (our block club name) suggested a 'street beautification project'. The initial idea was flowering trees but that seemed a bit overwhelming so another resident suggested planting something on the tree lawns. We decided on Daffodils and a motivated resident accessed 'free' daffodils from the City, distributed and/or planted them on 25 tree lawns this past Fall.
Many of us crossed our fingers over the winter and hoped that some of the bulbs would bloom...... less than 6 months later, a drive down Marlborough (between GPB and Thurston) shows that the efforts of a few can benefit many. One of the other things happening is that residents who didn't want to plant flowers or seemed uninterested are now asking how they can plant in their OWN yards (this is the broken window theory in reverse!)
if you get a moment in the next few days, take a ride or walk on Marlborough and see how nice the daffodils look! We hope to plant many more this coming Fall.
