In attendance:

Christopher Arnone (Frontier)

John Boutet (Communications Co-Chair)

Eleanor Coleman (SWAN on behalf of Robert Walker-Smith)

Joan Roby-Davison (Sector 4 CDC)

Purpose of Meeting:  To establish a list of potential WiFi "hot spots" in the SW Quadrant that could be visited next week by SW Communications Committee members and Frontier staff.

Target:  Who will benefit most?  Where does access make sense?

Selection Criteria: (1) central location that provides activities/programs and (2) in an area of need.

Notes:

  • SW Community Center location attractive because (1) it is in the center of the SW Quadrant, (2) high-need area, and (3) Frontier office across the street which could result in reduced build-out costs and better/stronger bandwidth.
  • Need to determine installation and maintenance expenses.  Largest cost is the network feed.
  • Joan noted that connectivity could prove to be a selling point for businesses; she will contact the Chamber of Commerce to explore any options/support they may have (e.g., might they sponsor enterprise areas?).
  • CDC is the likely fiduciary for funding as they are the only entity that serves the entire Quadrant.

Next Steps:  Create a ranking system based on (1) how physically and financially feasible a network is and (2) where is it most beneficial.  Once we have an idea of where to start, we can determine how to proceed in phases.

Following is the list of 9 potential WiFi Hot Spot locations:
