In the Spring of 2013 the Rochester School Board voted to close School #44 on Chili Avenue at an unspecified time before 2021. Current Superintendent plans would end classes there at the end of the 2015-2016 school year. Unfortunately renovation of School #16 which was closed on Post Avenue is not expected to be finished until the start of the 2018 school year. That means that the 19th Ward will have half of its neighborhood schools closed at the same time. Having schools in the neighborhood is important for parental involvement, particularly for poor families with limited transportation options for attending school functions, and for strong school connections.
Many in the 19th Ward community would, at very least, like the School Board to resolve to keep School #44 open until School #16 reopens on Post Avenue so that neighborhood school seats are available to students who need them.
The RCSD School Board will meet at 6:30 pm this Thursday, February 26th in Central Office 131 W. Broad St. I encourage you to call 262-8525 before noon on the 26th and sign up to speak and voice your concerns. Also you are encouraged to email the board asking for this resolution. Contact information can be found at: Contact Info: School Board, Superintendent
Even if you should decide not to speak, your presence is important.
Parking is available in the lot on the east side of the building.
