19th Ward Community Association
Housing Committee
Wednesday Meeting Notes For Posting
December 5, 2012
final

The Meeting convened at 11:05am.

Present: John B, Marian B, Henrene B, Toni Oi, June R, Donna S, Mark S.

The minutes for 11/29 meeting were reviewed, minor corrections made and minutes were approved.

The group reviewed the positive results of the Housing Committee presentation to the Executive Committee the previous evening. It was scheduled as a 15 minute presentation by June and Toni. The presentation ran much longer because of interest on the part of the Executive Committee for details of the housing code project as well as the ongoing totes project.

The Courtesy Notice that the Housing Committee will send out as part of this new housing code violation enforcement project which was passed out and discussed. It explains that in a cooperative effort between the city and the 19WCA we have surveyed their neighborhood and identified the following housing code infractions that we are warning them about to give them a chance to fix before we turn the turn the identified violations over to code enforcement. We will enforce code infractions more stringently for rental properties than for owner occupied properties

Problems with a very messy yard at 724 Thurston Road were discussed. Toni explained the procedure for following up on complaints if the initial report to the NSC does not produce results.

Meeting with John DeMott at the CDC office was discussed and we decided to to hold a meeting there in January.

Mark mentioned that the vacant house at the corner of Enterprise and A Place has been sold and is being worked on.

The Housing Committee won the grant-writing-training auction item at the 19WCA convention. We will schedule a special meeting with McClurg Vivian and interested committee members for a seminar. We will open it to 19WCA fund raising groups. We should look at a much more aggressive grant writing effort for the 19WCA so we can do more.

As a final discussion Toni suggested what streets to cover for the housing code violations. It had been agreed to initially concentrate on main arteries. Streets that were agreed upon are, for the periphery, West Ave, Chili Ave, Genesee Park Blvd and Genesee Street. Cross streets to cover are Brooks, Arnett, Thurston, and Woodbine. Work on these will start in January.

Meeting adjourned at 12:25 pm.
