I think it would be great to have a set of four burglary prevention weekends. The idea would be to set aside an hour on each of 4 preceding Saturdays (1-2) as an example, where everyone would work on one of the ideas in the Burglary handout and tie it in with our local merchants and agencies.  So the first week could be securing windows. Individuals could preorder supplies at Hunts. Hunts could do a workshop at Noon. The RPD could provide guidance, and everyone would all go back to their street and install better window locks together. Block clubs could help out. Neighbors could help neighbors for an hour and kids could sell lemonade at lemonade stands.  Anyone interested in helping set this up?

The 19th ward or Sector 4 or another group could take the lead on this.  There are probably some block grants or other grants that could be sought to help out with the event.  The City would be good to get involved as well are our city council people.  This could happen this Fall, or sooner.  If grants were sought we might also be able to install trophy cameras on other streets.  We might ask home security companies to come and do presentations or set up booths (and donate to support the efforts).

We could also have the Fire Department get involved and provide information on smoke alarms and CO2 detectors.

This is an excellent idea Dan.  We all have some of these projects on our "to do" lists that always get pushed back by other things that come up.  Getting the Crime Prevention Officers to come to weekend meetings may or may not be easy depending on what the overtime policy is right now, but Hunts workshops would probably be best run for several  weekdays and Saturday  to accommodate all interested individuals and weedays would be easy for having CPO's stop by.
Prevention 1st is a non-profit that also does home safety education and training.  I'm on the board - I'll send the information to them to see if they can also participate.  They have some kid-oriented home safety & fire safety programs.  You can find more at  http://www.prevention1st.org/
See Adam's note, we will be discussing this idea at Wednesday's meeting.
Adam McFadden Dear Community Resident:

I will be dedicating this month's Street Watch meeting to the rash of burglaries that have plagued 19th Ward residents this year. Representatives from the Rochester Police Department will be present as well as 19th Ward Crime Alert facilitator Dan DeMarle. We will discuss solutions, reporting procedures, and the creation of a separate public safety initiative that would invite specialists to discuss protecting our homes.

Our Street Watch meeting is this Wednesday, August 31st at 7 PM at the Rochester Presbyterian Home, 256 Thurston Road.

Thank you. I hope you can attend.
Adam McFadden, Public Safety Chair, Rochester City Council South District
There will be a planning meeting Tuesday night 9/6/11 at 6:30 at the NET Office for a burgalary prevention convention, sort of in October.  All are invited to the planning meeting.

Can you send me the date, approx time for this, Dan, I can't find my noted from PCIC!

Alas, I will be out of town, but want to alert my block association: Winbourne United Neighbors.

For those who were unable to make this. We had a great event.  Much thanks go to Adam McFadden, John Borek, and all of the other volunteers who turned this into a successful event. We had around 100 people come through over the 3 hour event.  Great presentations from our Crime Prevention Officers.  Dave Hunt was there sharing his knowledge and giving tips.  ADT was present, Pace windows, State Farm Insurance,  Johnny Locksmith, and information from RGE.  I may have missed someone.  All of the local news media came to the event, there stories are posted on the 19th ward crime alert page.  We have had a number of new members join that group thanks to the publicity.
It was a very interesting event Dan.  Thank you and all the others who put this program together.  Here are a few pictures of the event.
