While at Boulder this morning for a meeting, I saw Rabbi Asher and several others go into the building, with what appeared to be rolled blueprints or drawings.  The weeds have been cleared in the patio and driveway as well.

 

I'll see if I can get an updated timeline - they had planned to be there for the start of the school year, but obviously missed that target date.

I spoke with Rabbi Asher a few days ago.  He expressed his disappointment that the design process for the space has taken longer than he would have liked, and that they were not able to use the space for the recent holidays.  He expects construction to start soon, and would like to be in the space in January when the students return from break.

 

I asked him if they would make sure that the weeds were removed, and that the place was maintaned a little better and he agreed to make that happen.

I had a conversation yesterday with Tommy Beaman of California Rollin' and he was expressing his frustration with the extensive bureaucracy that has not only resulted in delays in opening but continuous added costs associated with changes in requirements that are added in after plans are submitted and approved.  The lack of substantive communication between architect, engineer, crafts person (e.g. plummer), puts a burden on new business owners that the public is not privy to and creates the appearance of the owner "dragging his/her feet." In actuality, the longer it takes the owner to open up, the more money he/she is losing as they are having to pay utility bills, etc., regardless of sales income.   

I feel strongly that we should offer the community an Economic Development 101 workshop that brings to light all the nuances and hidden issues that result in what appear to be irrational and very unpopular decisions made to promote economic development.  Maybe it could be a virtual workshop:  we could post each of the delays occurring with the opening of California Rollin' and why they are occurring.  Just a thought.

I like the idea of posting news of the delays to new businesses as they occur. Perhaps the more the public is made aware of these barriers, the more likely those with the power to do so will be motivated to become more welcoming to new businesses instead of more obstructive.

I remember your suggesting this last year after the Boulder 'event' so we're a year later with the same idea. Is this something that the CDC might take the lead with developing/presenting?

Joan-

you mentioned new board members on the CDC. Can you post an updated listing of who those people are?

I think the CDC can take the lead on the Economic Development 101.  I'm working on a couple of fact sheets for economic development, so I can post those here as I get them completed if you think that would be helpful.

 

The current board includes:

Josanne Reaves, Chair

Bill Sullivan, Vice-Chair (19th Ward Rep)*

Colleen McCarthy, Treasurer

Eleanor Coleman, Secretary*

Ron Allen (SWAN Rep)

Kelvin Knight (PLEX Rep)*

Lynnette Robinson (COTS Rep)*

Barbara Jones

Hanif Abdul-Wahid

Stewart Putnam

Dana Miller, Past Chair

 

The names that are bold are people who live or work in the SW/Sector 4 neighborhoods.  Those with an * are new to the board, and most were appointed by their respective neighborhoods and their terms began within the past year.  Eleanor was recruited as she is the queen of communication (and a long-time neighborhood resident who also works and volunteers in the community).

One more question, Joan. Other than those appointed as neighborhood group representatives, how are the CDC board members s/elected?

Like most non-profit organizations, we are always looking for board members.  The neighborhood reps are appointed, but for the rest we look for specific skill sets.  We could use people with: real estate, retail recruitment, neighborhood development, legal, or finance skills. 

Interested prospective members submit a resume and our Membership Committee reviews and interviews candidates.  They present candidates to the board with their recommendation and they are voted on.
