With two libraries serving the SW Quadrant, keeping them open is critical to the health of the neighborhoods. In lower income communities (nationally), residents rely on public libraries for access to computers and the internet as well as resources for employment. They function like community centers, bringing people together.

Thanks for sharing this, Joan!
We have been very lucky in Rochester that our current City administration understands how critical library services are to the neighborhoods served. Cuts over the past few years have been manageable, but who knows how long that can go on. We are relying more and more on volunteers as demands for our services increase, and we're very fortunate to be situated in a community that supports the library as much as the 19th Ward does.
One thing to remember about any neighborhood institution: if you value having it in your neighborhood, use it! Otherwise it will eventually die away. Next time you're heading over to Brighton to see what they have on the shelf, stop in at the Arnett Branch or the Phillis Wheatley Community Library. Our shelves of best-sellers are always full!
