While not completely surprising, this is VERY disturbing...... WHEN was the shooting?? I appreciate getting this information in this forum (thank you Mark) but is there any way to get ongoing information and updates about these 19th ward events??

I don't know exactly when the shooting was. I believe it was a week or so ago. I will explore with Kris about getting more regular updates from her office, and sending them to our neighborhood groups. I am sure she will be more than willing to help.

Thanks Mark for keeping us updated, you always seem to have a good handle on things (good and bad) that are happening in the 19th Ward. Your a great asset to our community.

Margy, I too would love to have some sort of way to funnel all 19th Ward information to one spot. It's one reason why I started Location19. But I am finding that it has its limitations. I have been doing a little research into an online system that would let people submit crime related infomation, that could be monitored by the maybe the NET office in each area of the city. Such a system would help find hot spots as they form. Maybe this is something I need to sit down and talk with folks from NET. When we lived in Burlington, VT we had a system for our part of the city, and it seemed to work pretty well. In the meantime I'll keep looking in to it.

When I first lived in this community, we received regular updates (via phone) about crime, etc. That stopped many years ago........I'm not sure why as I know that the technology exists given the calls i get re: clean sweep, various elections, etc. I've also asked for years that the 19WCA and PCIC publish the information and minutes from their meetings. I don't think that people who want information should always need to GO to a meeting - that process is overly time consuming and not possible for many people for a variety of reasons.
I believe that we have a serious crime problem in our neighborhood yet few people want to acknowledge it or openly talk about it. I don't know if its denial, 'spin', apathy or if people have just given up. Perhaps it's a symptom of PTSD.......

Margy, I believe you are right about our crime problem. I've lived on some streets and in some cities with acknowledged crime problems, and what happened was that law-abiding people became isolated and tended to keep to themselves. It's a way of protecting yourself, both physically and mentally--you leave everyone else alone in the hope that they will leave you alone, and you try to create a small zone of peace and order by turning inward. Mr. Homer and I are still getting used to the concept of neighbors, and still find ourselves easily startled and awkward around others when we're out in our yard. It's something to be fought against, so that we can keep fighting for our neighborhood, but at the same time there really is only so much neighbors can do without extensive support from law enforcement.

MacClurg Vivian is the secretary for PCIC and she will submit meeting notes for posting here, pending approval from sources. It will happen. Thank you for again mentioning a concern that many in the community have had for a number of years, and hopefully now it will be taken care of with a summary we can all view.

I am curiois about the 'pending approval from sources' comment.... it seems that someone who attends a 'public' meeting should not need approval to share what was discussed at that meeting (unless you're referreing to the 'secretary' as being some sort of formal role).
Anyway,I appreciate your pushing this forward and hope that we can get information flowing more freely and quickly so we can all be better informed citizens of our community!

Thurston CONTINUES to be a mess and is getting worse.
I called 911 last week about the abandoned house next to Angelo's - people were hanging out there. Almost EVERY time i drive by there i see people hanging out on the steps - today it looked like a window and/or door had been broken.
I also noticed (today) that Thurston is AGAIN filled with trash. I don't know what goes on there on Friday nights but it is absolutely contributing to the DECLINE of this neighborhood. It seems that Friday nights attract a LOT of people -for??? drugs, the bars?
I also watched Crime 360 the other day- the show features a few Rochester crimes and BOTH of the ones that I saw have connections to the 19th ward including one of the homicides that occurred right on Thurston.

Having lived here for 25 years, Margy, I can assure you the answer mostly is the bars. Friday and Saturday nights, the Thurston Grill and Cross Keys attract crowds from all over. In addition, there is a food truck that parks outside and serves on those nights. (All Good?) Drugs may be a small part. Some nights when I get out from work at 11 PM, it is almost impossible to move down the side street to turn onto Thurston. Or even move down the road to turn left onto Enterprise.

Please, all, continue to call 911 when you see people on the steps at the abandoned house next to Angelo's. This is a request not only from me and my neighbors on Ellicott St., but from our Crime Prevention Officers.

So is the "FOOD CART" the provider of all of the styrofoam containers that are littered all over Thurston every weekend?? Do food carts require a license/permit to operate???

Do the police make any rounds on Thurston or has it become a matter of "that's just how things work here in this neighborhood" (i.e. that it's OK for cars to park illegally, for vendors to sell food on the street, etc and it doesn't matter that 'patrons' litter the streets with trash!)

Re: the abandoned house next to Angelos.... I can call the police, but I need to say that I have SEEN police cars drive by at the same time I have driven by and NOT stop.

Please, please, please let Ofc. Kristin Runyon and Lt. Ray Dearcop know about these incidents if you call 911 and don't get an appropriate response, or if you see patrol cars drive past a situation that you believe needs immediate attention. Even if they are not on duty - which they are not on the weekends - they can discuss any response deficiencies with the Patrol Division. Their contact information is:

Give them as much information as you can: date, time, place, description of people, the number of the patrol car if it applies, etc. I truly believe that they will do everything they can to help us, but they can't do anything if they don't know about it.

I just reported the house next to Angelo's (3-4 men hanging out, some eating take out food, etc) to a patrol car sitting in front of Hunts - they said that they would go and check it out but didn't move right away - hopefully they called another car to check it out. My sense is that the officers MIGHT have been watching for other activity. It's early but Thurston is VERY active tonight- there are already 2 cars parked on the sidewalks!
