Springing off from a discussion on the Yahoo Group and from a discussion here. Shopping in the 19th Ward. What's hot, what's not. Where are the best buys. Where's the best pizza, Spanish food? Have you tried the food at D & L's. Where's the best place to buy milk? coffee? cleaning supplies? Christmas presents? What stops you from shopping in the neighborhood. What excites you about shopping in the neighborhood. How many local merchants do you know by name? Any body know of local coupons, for our local stores.

With the Luminary Evening coming up, we all have a reason to park on Thurston Road and march into Hunts. While there buy some batteries, or cleaning supplies. Don;t recycle that kit from 5 years ago, spend some a "wad in the ward". Someone please come up with a better slogan than that!!! How about making this a forum group for people to share shopping stories or great buys and finds in the SW part of the city.

Bigg Mouth's had been struggling financially for a while. Location was an issue.... by the time i heard about it (late summer), Mary Jane (the owner) was already having financial difficulty. She also was robbed one day and was very unhappy with the RPD response. She did get some increased business from 19th ward residents thru word of mouth and I think was going to put an ad in Location19 but it must not have been enough. It is sad - it was a decent restaurant with very good prices and a fairly broad menu.
Did not you see Bigg Mouth's Silicenced? Check in more often.

Happy New Year.
Monopoly at Tops. Tops has started a fun promotion with chances to win instantly or from collecting game pieces. Walked up in the cold and bought some nice looking vegetables and collected a game piece. We won a coupon for Perry's Ice Cream and got four game pieces. Details are in the flier in the Sunday paper and posted around the store. It looks like a lot of fun and there are some nice prizes.

Rocco (the store manager) was working today and we had a nice talk. The store was spotless and the entrance was very clean. I know during heavily trafficked times it can look a little tired, but in the morning the floors and the store sparkle with how clean they are.
That's good to know.
I was at Tops on West Ave yesterday around 5:00( Saturday night) and it looked pretty unkempt. I usually don't go the the West Ave Tops since they have limited items but in a pinch it is OK. One thing that all Tops seem to have is a very good selection and variety of cuts of pork. Their pork is better than Wegmans. I don't do butcher shops so I can't comment on them compared to Cutia's or Skips or any at the Public Market venders.
I have been doing a lot of grocery shopping a Price Right both University & South Town. Their prices beat even Wal-Mart when it comes to 90% of their stock. They again have limited items but when you compare what they carry to exactly the same items at the other grocery stores they are usually cheaper.
As most know, there are few pizza places that will deliver to the 19th ward, however Salvatore's on Mt Read DOES deliver here and they have a pretty decent selection of pizza, subs, salads, chicken, etc. Their prices are reasonable and their delivery is quite timely!

For baked goods, check out the Genesee Bakery on Mt Hope (in Mt Hope plaza). They are family owned and make/bake some really good stuff. Prices are VERY reasonable and the people who own the place are terrific.

If you're in the market for running or athletic shoes, Jim Dalberth's on Genesee Street (next to the NSC office) has the best selection in all of Rochester. It's another family owned business that has been around for a VERY long time.

The Sunoco station on Chili Avenue (near across from 390) is reasonably priced and the mechanics seem quite trustworthy.
Thank you for all the good tips for shopping in the 19th Ward! If you're looking for very good pizza in the 19th Ward, go no further than Meneze's on Chili Ave. (phone is 328-3010). Their white pizza is the best and their wings can be as hot as you like (nuclear really is hot). They used to be on Thurston when we first moved to Inglewood. And they deliver! (Even to baseball games at Genesee Valley Park).
They are also donating pizza and drinks for the luminary talk this Saturday from noon to 1:30 at the Arnett Library. They also were a sponsor of this year's 19th ward treasure hunt.
They actually have the best pizza of almost any I've ever had! I remember when they were on Thurston. Their subs are not bad either!
I love Meneze's! Not being from Rochester, (Utica - Italian central), it's been very hard to find a good pizza and low and behold, Meneze's is right in our back yard. I've tried all the other big names, but they were never consistent or close to what I was looking for. Meneze's pizza is always consistent, always hot, always wonderful in it's gooey lushishness. Also, THEY DON'T PUT SUGAR IN THEIR SAUCE!!!! Muah!

The Genesee Bakery is incredible and you cannot find anything better anywhere!
Mark,

Have you tried Baker Street Bakery on Park Ave near Summerton?
Our vet is on Summerton and Baker Street has the tastiest Walnut Scones I've ever had.
Ok I have been to this bakery and I agree that they are a real treat.
