Housing Committee, 19th Ward Community Association

Meeting Minutes, August 21, 2014

Present:  Deb Leary, John and Joanne DeMott, Mark Sweetland, Kathy O’Neill, Emilye Crosby.

July Minutes approved with two minor changes.  Joanne moved for approval, seconded by Kathy.

NSC Report:  Deb received a reply from David Hawkes.  Reviewing report on complaints for code compliance and zoning violations, Deb noted many reports for toter violations, but not too many in 19th Ward.  Deb also said she will start visiting the NSC every week or so, as it is more effective than e-mailing.

Recognition Certificates:  Deb will develop something possibly in postcard format that can be handed out to people who have done something nice to their property.  “Thank you for making our neighborhood look better” with space to personalize by adding what had been done.  We can also give these to delegates to hand out.

Update 19 Article:  Sept. 16 is deadline for October issue.  (There will be a report to Delegates in September.)  Article to focus on accomplishments to date, goal being code compliance and zoning violations.  We have picked six properties to work on with code enforcement for positive changes.   These may serve as examples for publicity.  We should also mention program for recognition awards; take photos with permission for Update.

New Business:  Add 54 Weldon St. to list for code compliance due to number of residents there.  Explore working with U of R where students live off campus where more than four occupy the same house.  Deb will draft a letter to ask for a meeting to establish a working relationship, including Laurel Contemanolis, head of housing, and dean Matthew Burns, with a copy to U of R president.  We want to inform the U of R of the Housing Committee’s purpose.

Check on updating 19th WCA website for Housing Committee section.

Next Meeting:  Thursday Sept. 18, 11AM, 19th WCA Office.
