Minutes of the December 6th, 2018 meeting of
The 19th Ward Community Association Schools Committee
Attendees: John Laing, Jay Ross, Dan Ross, Moiet James, Brianna Dean, and Sarah Yaworski
November minutes
Approved
Spelling Bee
Co-chairs Moiet James and Brianna Dean shared their progress.
Spelling words were sent to schools for comments and are ready to be distributed to the students to study over the holidays. They shared a new logo that looks great. It doesn’t include the date so can be used year-over-year. A request was made to the Community Foundation for $3,500 for expenses. A discussion about schedule issues lead to a suggestion to make up at one page schedule highlighting the date of the Spelling Bee (April 6) and the dates for information from the schools. Should include the school vacation schedule (mid-winter Feb 18-22), as well. This could be printed on the back side of the spelling word lists that are sent home with the students.
Thoughts on Superintendent selection
Several ideas were bandied about. Dan agreed to write up a draft memo to go to the board.
Next steps on local busing
Given the approaching superintendent change we have slowed down our work on the busing issue. We should update the position paper (I was to find the last version) and all look for opportunities for adding to the petition.
School reports
We shared some observations by volunteers of activities at school 16. I was to contact the principal to setup a meeting with volunteers.
The next committee meeting will be Tuesday January 8th at 7 pm in the 19th Ward Community Association office.
