Minutes of the February 6th, 2018 meeting of
The 19th Ward Community Association Schools Committee
Attendees: Dan Ross, Jay Ross, John Laing, John Boutet, Antonio Alvarado, Jacob Wheeler, Doug Giebel, and Harlan Ost
January minutes
Approved
Spelling Bee Status
Doug and Antonio reported on the Saturday sessions at the Arnett library. There have been 10-12 students each week as well as community and fraternity volunteers. Unfortunately I was late in reserving the room and some weeks we may need to share with other groups. Doug has let the school coordinators know who is attending each week. Paul Burgett will give the keynote talk again. Banners are available for directing family members to Hoyt Hall. The fraternity is working on a new logo for this year
Path Forward discussion
There is an abundance of material to read through. John B has captured most of it, as did Justin Murphy. It’s available on-line at location 19 in the link to Path Forward draft. Dan was to draft a note which we would send out asking for more information on the background information.
School 44 Update
School Chief Green met with the faculty of school 44 and caused concern as she mentioned the possibility of the school being closed. Fortunately the status of the school (staying open) was clarified at the next school board meeting.
School 16
I was to send a copy of the paper to Carla Roberts, Principal of School 16 and talk to her about the plan. School 16 is holding their project fair on March 22 from 6 to 7:30. The 19th Ward Community Association will have a table. We can show the artists renderings of the renovation and also a map of the 19th ward where attendees can place a sticker or marker to mark their home.
Renovations of City Rec centers could work out well for the use of the Post Ave school 16. Adams St rec center will be closed in the 18-19 year and then Flint ST 19-20.
School 10
School 10 will close for renovations this year as part of the FMP.
Old/New Business
Harlan thanked us for our work and encouraged us to recruit new members for the association and our committee.
The next meeting will be Tuesday March 6th at 7 pm in the 19th Ward Community Association office.
