Minutes of the November 16th, 2016 meeting of

The 19th Ward Community Association Schools Committee

Attendees: John Laing, Dan Ross, Jay Ross

Guests: Pat Hoestermann, 2017 Sigma Phi Epsilon Spelling bee chair, Tarek Yarnout, 2016 Sigma Phi Epsilon VP of Programming

Approval of October minutes

Accepted

Spelling Bee

  • Pat and Tarek came representing the fraternity. Word lists for this year have been sent to the schools and the library. The Scripps list provides 50 words per grade, so I took last year’s 50 plus this year’s 50 to get a list of 100 per grade. Looking at the data from last year this should be sufficient. Pat requested a set of lists. Pat requested access to the Scripps site that has more information.
  • Looking at dates around the RCSD spring break and U of R’s schedule we selected either April 8 or 29 depending on the availability of Hoyt Hall and activities on campus. Pat and Nick Foti, 2017 Sigma Phi Epsilon VP of Programming, will make the selection.
  • Practice sessions will be held at the Arnett library from 10 to 11 Saturday mornings starting January 7. Fraternity brothers and neighborhood people will be available.
  • We are on schedule according to the summary put together last year by Daniel Aliber.

Listening and Learning with the Superintendent

We’re on schedule for Dec 5 from 6 to 8 at school 44. A revised flyer has been sent to the principals of the schools in the 19th ward. We will supply the refreshments and school 44 will provide activities for children.

19th Ward Convention

We will have a table to show information on the Listening and Learning, Spelling Bee, status of school 16 and volunteer signup.

School 16 status

The BAC (Building Advisory Committee) includes the architects and engineers along with school administrators and teachers and community representatives. Attached is a summary of the current status.

Old/New Business

The newspaper reported that school 1 will close for renovation, and that the students/staff would move to Wilson Foundation Academy. This would eliminate any presence of a middle school on the west side which is a concern.

Next Meeting

Wednesday, December 14th at 7 pm in the 19th ward association office.
