11/10/2023 Coalition Meeting Minutes
Attendance: Howie Maffucci, Phyllis Moss, Chojy Schroeder, Henry Padron, John Boutet, Don Pryor, Lee Loomis, Dan Drmacich
Discussion & Decisions:
1. We agreed that Dan should send the Coalition letter that he drafted (attached) regarding our concerns about the Regents Blue Ribbon Committee for Graduation Expectations & Measures, and the NYSED's PLAN Pilot Project recommendations & decisions to all relevant groups & individuals. (See article in 11/11 D&C )
2. We received no feedback from RCSD BoE members on our letter (attached), concerning RCSD school closures and reconfiguration of schools. We agreed that Dan should contact Coalition & BoE member Amy Maloy, and newly elected BoE members to attend our next meeting to discuss their decisions.
3. Dan shared that at the 11/9 RASE Education Committee, that a final implementation plan was completed for creating a county-wide anti-racist, K-12 curriculum & PD process. It involves generating more funding to expand the work of the "Anti-Racist Curriculum Project," staffed by Kesha James & Shane Weigand. The RASE ED. Committee will begin work on the next priority RASE Education Recommendation, "Significantly Increasing the Number of Teachers of Color in Monroe County School Districts." Dan received support from our attending Coalition members to emphasize that the implementation for this plan to focus on the RCSD needs as a priority. The next RASE meeting is Thursday, 11/30 @ 6:30 & all Coalition members are invited to attend. Dan will share a link.
4. Adam Urbanski shared a news article that NYSUT is strongly supporting the Jamal Bowman Congressional Legislative "More Teaching, Less Testing" Bill. We need to lobby Joe Morelle to sign on as a sponsor. Please contact his office by email, letter, or phone call to urge him to support the bill! Contact information:
Email: remorelle@mail.house.gov
Phone: Local Office: 232-1954
Wash. DC: 202-225-3615
Please take 5 minutes to do this! It can make a difference!
5. We discussed & agreed that we should initiate a "Community Read" using the book "Punished for Dreaming" by RCSD Edison Tech graduate, Bettina Love; currently a professor of education at Columbia Teachers College. Dan will seek feedback on this from RTA & local colleges. Please put the book on your reading list & consider purchasing from our Coalition member Henry Padron's Rochester book store: Hiipocampo on Clinton Ave.
6. Dan shared that he met with Adam Urbanski, former RCSD Supt. & current school re-invention consultant, Peter McWalters & Professor Rich Ryan to discuss the possibility of initiating a PD process that would emphasize intrinsic motivation and self-determination strategies. The initial meeting was very positive. Stand by for more information! (See Ryan research & graphic, attachment.)
7. We agreed to meet again on Friday, December 1st at 4:00 by Zoom.
