Welcome & Introductions

School Updates

  • Andrea Lee introduced herself as the new principal for School #19; Andrea was formerly the School #2 principal. School #19 is growing by 120 students. No longer a middle school; new student orientation on 8/19 to welcome new students and their parents. Will keep the Arts for All program and are working to maintain programs that were formerly instituted. No longer in receivership

  • Andrea getting calls from School #2 Parents not understanding that School #25 has taken over School #2. There is some confusion and disappointment in loss of another neighborhood school.

  • RCSD staff receiving training for implementing the new curriculum model.

  • Lee Loomis is scheduling a lunch date with Sylvia Cooksie to see if there’s any information about what is happening at School #10, now to be School #53. Lee has provided tutors for 10 years. Teachers will need to see what the tests show as far as summer-learning loss which would then help better assess tutor needs.

  • Students are generally more accepting about different family make-ups; not so phased by LGBTQ relationships. Rochester seen as gay-friendly.

Other:

  • Pakistani family living with John B. Family is looking for permanent housing.

Westside Farmers Market - Tuesdays 4-7, 831 Genesee St.

  • Bike Rodeo will take place on 8/20, 4-7pm; good for bicycle safety and youth will receive a helmet.

Rapids Cemetery

  • Burials from Revolutionary War and Civil War.

  • Reclaimed the wild raspberries; good space for elementary and daycare kids to visit. Cub Scouts from 19th Ward were involved, helpful, explorative.

  • Winding down now and will focus on homelessness..

REACH

  • REACH had 6 shelters last year; down to 1 shelter on Barbury Ave serving about 13 persons

  • St. Peters Kitchen is the foodbank; Bob Boyd is the current CEO. Growing their own vegetables. Operate 6 days a week. Can fill banana boxes with a 4 day food supply. Largest customer base is seniors. Serving over 400 persons per day.

School #19 has a food pantry; they are interested in fresh vegetables.
