Hi Deb,
I'm delighted to have you join us. I've been going through featuring local missing persons whose family was at the January 28th meeting on the banner and including links to the missing in the box on the left of the Main page. I know you were at there and some of the meetings at SWAN.
Now that you are a member of Location19, when you sign-in, you can post to the Discussion Forum, Events calendar and Blog section of Location19 and you can join any of the various groups to participate in the discussions there.
Being a group member lets you post to the group and also permits you to receive email notifications from that group about events and other info that may not be posted on Location19 itself.
Eleanor Coleman and I have had it on our list of things to do to get a Missing Persons Group going on Location19. I'm hopping that Eleanor and Nicole Coleman and other family members of the missing can put together a group soon to keep the needed work going looking for loved ones. One thing you should be aware of about Location19 is that everything posted is open to the world. Google and other web indexing services can see everything posted and index it. Consequently anyone on the face of the earth can Google it. That can be a plus when you are trying to get the word out about something. We may only have a little over 400 members at present vs. millions on Facebook but I just Googled 19th Ward Crime Alert, which you are familiar with, and Google references to it cite Location19 and other open site's mention of the Crime Alert group but Google can't index what is on Facebook itself. In the case of the the Crime Alert group that is a good thing. For other applications a site that can be searched w/o logging-in can be a plus. I know you are a Facebook user. Keep this difference in mind when you choose what to post where.
Be sure your email preferences are set for you to receive email notices. I think by default they are but you can check the Location19 Email Preferences instruction page to be sure.
It's a good idea to subscribe to the Daily Email Digest so you receive an update of new activity on the site.
If you ever need to change your picture, step by step instructions can be found here How to Post Your Picture - It's easy!
I look forward to your participation. If you have any questions don't hesitate to call Marian or me at 328-4271.
John
