We are trying to close the loop on crime issues in the neighborhood. So I wanted to post an update and ask for help.
First we are trying to have less crimes occur.
On October 15th we are hosting a Burglary Prevention Clinic at 121 Lincoln Avenue. We will have two Crime Prevention Officers present, Vendors from various security/alarm systems, How to presentations. The idea is to individuals to come and get information to take back to help make their house/apartment harder to break into. Ideally we want groups of people to come together to go back together to thier street and make their street or section of a street safer. Plus its easier to do the work together than trying to it alone.
Second we are trying to alert others as crimes are occurring or let others know a crime has happened
The 19th Ward crime alert page is where people can post things as they happen (after calling 911 first) or shortly afterwards. This allows neighbors to know as soon as possible about an issues so they can help out or take steps to be more watchful vigilant etc.
Third we are tyring to close the loop after a crime occurs.
We are also now trying an experiment to close the loop after an event happens. When people post a crime issue on the Facebook page, we are attempting to follow up with the RPD and DA. We can try to keep track if arrests have been made, or just find out what happened. If an arrest has been made, we can find out who the suspect is, and then follow the case through the court system. Neighbors can then get involved to write impact letters to Judges and the DA, and to show up at court hearings to ensure suspects or convicted criminals are not back in our neighborhood.
This all takes time. So we need volunteers to help out with the Burglary Prevention clinic. We also need people with experience in writing impact letters and tracking people through the black box of the court system to help with tracking down dates, names and appearance times. If you are a court watch person or are interested in helping out. Post here with stories, information, etc, or send me a private message.
Thanks
Dan
