My sister-in-law Roxanne raises poultry, to feed her family food she trusts and as a hobby. Last spring my husband asked if she would be willing to raise a goose for us for Christmas. Roxanne is a cautious person and knows how vulnerable small free range birds (as all of hers are) to predators, so she bought eight. As it happens, 7 of them have now lived full and happy lives. She has fed them grain as well as what they graze on their own, and they follow her all around. Roxanne says that while she's not upset by the prospect of them becoming Christmas dinner, she doesn't think she could eat one herself. We know that one or two (I need to check in) of our friends are interested in buying one of them, but that leaves 5 or 6 very large and happy geese with nowhere to go on Christmas, and Roxanne has spent quite a bit of money on the grain; in fact (with the original purchase cost of the birds) about $75 per goose. Free range geese sell on line for about $10/lb (which comes to about $80-$100), and I now know why they cost so much! Now I am hoping to find people who would like to buy one for Christmas, in about that price range. Roxanne will be having a friend butcher and freeze them in early December, and I will bring them to Rochester at that time. Please let me know if you would be interested in trying (or continuing) the time-honored tradition of Christmas goose -- with the knowledge that these geese have led very happy lives!
