Tell us about yourself:
My name is Lynn Marie Smith, I am 52 years old, and I'm a new resident to your Southwest community. I was born and raised in the Bronx of New York City. My youth germinated discoveries of many seeded passion's in assisting, counseling, and protecting those around me. In high school I began to take interest in the Criminal Justice field. Starting college, in 1983 I began to nurture my curiosity in the study of Criminal Laws. But I didn't complete the course work (sadly to say) due to moving on and starting a family in the town of Batavia New York. A town I grew to love and feel comfortable enough to reside in and raise my own family until 2002, though 2007. I was asked a question that changed my life? I was asked if I have ever heard of a cooperation called Job Corps? I replied, no. I was asked if offered the opportunity to make a better living for myself would I do it? My reply was, yes. Next thing I knew, I was vising the center of Iroquois Job Corps and introduced to the Human Resource staff. I was interviewed, followed by a tour on the center grounds, which landed me in a female dormitory for 45-minutes. I was the only staff inside the dormitory with a count of 20 plus females. Needless to say, I was hired to start immediately. I later learned that I was seated in the worst female dormitory. The center housed two female dorms and two male dorms for a total of 255 students. I learned the rules, policies, and procedures of the Job Corps cooperation. I learned once I was promoted, I had the ability to change some of the policies and procedures to enhance the safety in living conditions within the dormitory . I learned that I had the ability to help change the behavior of those who needed assistance. This experience reopened the doors to the dreams I've forgotten about which was in helping others. Not only that, I was also allowed to change and or assist in the redevelopment of polices and procedures. Like, student's with earned didn't get into trouble, break their curfew, assisted in helping others peers or the staff? They were awarded points, thru creating a "Phase List" which rated as low as one, and, as high as four. This was the way I could implement laws. Change behaviors. Correct in writing and follow through with what I called a workable plan. It's now 2016 and I 've since worked not only in Western New York but, I was also chosen to assist with my skills in Albany Georgia at a sister center titled Turner Job Corps. The third larges center in the nation of 113 Job Corps Centers which housed 900 on the center and 100 at a military base. My goal is to be a living, and active part taker of positive change in this community. Meaning I'm looking to be employed from working in a community center, a homeless shelter, to a food pantry. I look to enter from an entry level sharing my cares, passions, talents, and time. I see a vision here and I wish to bring it alive...
