Summer in the SouthWest means more than just sun and fun – it also means the return of the Summer Meals program! Thanks to a free program sponsored locally by the City of Rochester, the Rochester City School District, and Foodlink, all kids 18 and under can access free, healthy meals at locations right in their neighborhood.
A recent report by the Center for Governmental Research (CGR) that local participation is low and kids aren’t taking advantage of this free resource. Last year, only 4,700 received meals through the Summer Meals Program. That’s only 22% of eligible children in the city!
The CGR report cited lack of awareness among parents and kids as one of the reasons that children aren’t participating in the program. Residents can do their part by spreading the word to their families, friends, and neighbors that this program is available to children beginning as early as June 24.
