Summer in the SouthWest means more than just sun and fun – it also means the return of the Summer Meals program!  Thanks to a free program sponsored locally by the City of Rochester, the Rochester City School District, and Foodlink, all kids 18 and under can access free, healthy meals at locations right in their neighborhood.

A recent report by the Center for Governmental Research (CGR) that local participation is low and kids aren’t taking advantage of this free resource.  Last year, only 4,700 received meals through the Summer Meals Program.  That’s only 22% of eligible children in the city!

The CGR report cited lack of awareness among parents and kids as one of the reasons that children aren’t participating in the program.  Residents can do their part by spreading the word to their families, friends, and neighbors that this program is available to children beginning as early as June 24.

For families looking to take advantage of the program, meals will be available at many different places in our community.  Some locations include:

  • Adlai E. Stevenson School No. 29
  • SWAN
  • Boys and Girls Club
  • Campbell Street Community Center
  • Genesee Valley Park Field House
  • Sinkler Rec Center
  • St. Monica’s Church Rec Center

For specific site times and dates, or to find other locations across the city, please call 211 or visit healthikids.org.
