I wanted to create a group to talk about things that are happening that affect us politically. I think we all need to be smart and active voters, and i hope that starting this group will help to facilitate that for the south west. This group is about sharing opinions and ideas. Its good to share feelings about the elected officials who represent us, but this really isn't the place to campaign for someone or flat out lambast the people you dislike.
The more active and aware we are in regards to the things that affect us politically, the stronger we will become as a voting block. The strength we develop as an active and informed voting group will necessitate our elected officials to become more receptive to addressing out interests and concerns.

At this point i, personally, I have very very little interest in national politics, and refuse to vote for any offices higher than state gov. Those candidates are all bought and paid for by corporate donations, and are beholden to us only with lip service as far as i'm concerned. Better to ignore what they do completely (as we really have little to no control over their actions individually if we're honest with ourselves). i think the popular vote is important, but that in the scheme of things all politics eventually become local and i, personally, don't consider it particularly fruitful to spend more then 10-20% of the overall attention i would devote to political matters on national issues.
Obviously, we have to push for the National Popular Vote initiative. The state has acted. I am not aware of any local pushes for this change. It is time though. Keep us posted if any local new thrusts are in the offing. Everyone ought to support!
New York has passed legislation "that added New York to an interstate agreement in which member states commit to award their electoral votes for president to the candidate that receives a majority of the national popular vote." http://www.nationalpopularvote.com/state/ny
It doesn't eliminate the electoral college, but it does bind them to cast their votes for the candidate the wins the majority of the popular vote nationwide.
I agree. The time seems right. Are you aware of any local initiatives pushing for this change?
Maybe it's time to get rid of the Electoral College for presidential voting, and install popular voting --- a real voice of the people.
Wow! Has it really been 3 years since this group was active? Maybe that's why we are looking at an incoming president who is not representative of most of the folks who voted this last election. I'm thinking it's time to reignite the passion that was the impetus around starting this group. Now is not the time to mumble and grumble; we have to educate ourselves and take action. What say you out there?
Less than 8% of the City's population voted for the winner in the Sept. primary for Mayor. Vote on Nov. 5 --- your vote can make a difference!
-> Get to know the candidates for School Board and GO VOTE!
The election is Tuesday November 5th.
Please get out and vote.
Almost all the candidates were at the Presbyterian Church School Board Candidates Forum last Wednesday.
