Thanks John and Mark for acknowledging this important step forward in justice and rights! I know many people, straight and gay, who worked very hard to make this happen. It is a testament to what can happen when good people work together to make the world a more welcoming place for all.

Well, with nice weather coming up, maybe we should organize a group at the Ravenwood garden for a ceremony!  Then you can celebrate them all at once!  Shannon used a JP who is a member of our community.  Is anyone interested in doing this? Then we can have a celebration right there, if people are interested.  I realize some people will want to have a more private and personal ceremony, but let me know if anyone is interested in this.  Just a thought.

I want to suggest a great book that just came out, oddly named: The Bucolic Plague, How Two Manhattanites Became Gentlemen Farmers. I know you remember libraries, so you can pick it up there, by Josh-Kilmer Purcell. I had to request it to Arnett, Marian, so I will drop it off on Sat. if not before. It is not due for two and a half weeks, as I read it in 24 hours! Most entertaining, and it says on the back cover, "laugh out loud," which I did. But it is also touching. I would say one of the best books of the year. It has a lot of fun stuff about farming, gardening, organic foods.

Josh-Kilmer Purcell is a contributing writer to OUT magazine, which is where I first read him, and then this book came out. It is not fiction, but a memoir on how he and his partner Brent went apple-hunting in fall and found a mansion near Cooperstown, in Sharon Springs, that they fell in love with and purchased. It is an amazing story. Josh was in advertising in NYC, and Brent (Dr. Brent,) worked for Martha Stewart. At the farm, they acquired a herd of 88 goats, and began making goat-milk soap. The adventure goes on from there, until both lose their jobs in profit-land, almost wreck their relationship, but survive and now may be prospering. The basic reason they wanted to buy the mansion was to get away from it all in the city, and in the end, it seems they may.

The book also is a look at what is of value to people as they live their lives: Josh seemed Oprah-oriented, and Brent obviously was very Martha-oriented. Because of this, a commentary on what is important and how two people made the farm happen, how great it was, and how rotten it became. But good prevailed. Given Josh's background, it may all be a story.

But one very well worth reading! It was interesting and fun.

So many good people live here, it only takes a few bad ones
to ruin it for all of us.
Please dont let that happen.
Take care of your neighbors.
Take care of your street.

1965 was the year the 19WCA formed to prevent blockbusting because African American families were moving in. That's 44 years ago if my arithmetic is right, and this is another step in our long tradition of not only tolerating, but welcoming good people of all kinds.
