Shooting 11/2, 6:30 p.m. - Congress/Custer

From Crime Prevention Officer Kris Runyon:

Just wanted to update you on an incidence of violence in your area tonight. It occurred around 6:30 p.m. One victim is unknown and the other wasn't completely cooperative. What we have pieced together is that 2 males were walking west bound on the north side of Congress. As they crossed by Custer St, a male fired 5-7 shots at them. We had some conflicting stories from the victim and some witnesses, but I think that is pretty close to what happened. We think the suspect walked/ran south on Custer and then west on Spruce. I don't have much description. m/b, medium build with a puffy dark winter coat and maybe a skull cap or other tight fitting hat. Feel free to pass it on to those in your area.

Because of everything that has happened lately, I am perfectly fine with anyone coming to our meeting tomorrow night, so please spread the word!

What time is your meeting at NSC? We're having a birthday celebration tomorrow night but I definitely want to be involved. Do you mind if I let some of the Weldon St. folks know about it? I am hoping that Location19 will be a central point for us all to share information. I'm sure so much of this is all connected and because we don't have relationships among us, the negative energy is free to flow wherever it wants without being addressed. I'm going to go to the calendar on the front page to make sure the 19th Ward Annual Convention is on it. I look forward to meeting you.

Yes, Eleanor, I am actually the president of the Virginia Ave block club, and we actually have a meeting scheduled tomorrow night at the neighborhood service center with Officer Runyon. After the shooting on Post, I decided to distribute flyers along Post Ave inviting residents to join our club and come to our meeting tomorrow night. I've had 2 people tell me they want to come tomorrow but have conflicts, but have not heard from anyone else on either street (except for Stephanie who is riding with me) so I am praying we have a good turnout. Where do I find out details on the dinner? I would definitely be interested in attending, but don't know anything about it.

On a side note, I just saw this story on channel 13's website. Does anyone know where in the city this happened?

There are several daycares right in that area so it really is devastating to know people are just out there in broad daylight shooting at each other. I agree with getting together and having a stronger presence on our streets. Are you part of a Block Club? Officer Kris Runyon was recommending that some of our streets combine our Block Clubs; it will make us stronger and disseminate information more effectively. Back several years ago, we created Neighbors of 19 South to focus on the 19th Ward area south of Brooks. Maybe we should consider reconvening and coming up with ways to get to know one another better (getting together just because of crime limits our effectiveness; we have to start doing everyday life activities together - fun and work - so we can build a strong community foundation that extends beyond times of high crime and danger). If you can, come to the 19th Ward Annual Dinner 11/19. Getting "delegates" for all of the Districts would be a great start!

This is right near my daycare, and I can tell you that I am not happy to hear this. I just can not figure out what on earth is happening lately. I am wondering if we could possibly organize a night out some night where we could walk the streets as a group to show these low life scums that we will not tolerate this type of behavior on our neighborhood streets. I would love to hear people's thoughts on this.
