Discussion & Decisions:
1. Dan reported that the Peter McWalters Re-Imagining Schools national webinar went very well & that Peter was very informative on why schools should not return to the status quo of curriculum, skills, schedule, organization & teaching & learning expectations, and move forward with a humanistic, research-based, constructivist, student-centered process. When the video of Peter's presentation becomes available, it will be shared with Coalition members.
2. We discussed our current websites & agreed to allow the one that will expire shortly to do so & continue with the other, subject to feedback by Ed Donnelly. We'll also need to discuss how to raise Coalition funds to finance it.
3. Dan reported that he had a productive meeting with Regent Wade Norwood & U of R Ed. Policy professor, Kara Finnigan, regarding a proposed meeting with Supt. Myers-Small to advance progressive, research-based education policies & practices to help RCSD students. They will be meeting with the Supt. in the near future, on a date to be agreed upon,
4. Dan reported that he & Howie will be meeting with Roc the Future, Mayor's & County Executive reps, Children's Agenda & Children's Institute reps on June 18th to discuss plans for a Coalition-initiated proposal for a RASE Education Recommendations Forum.
5. Donna & Chojy reported on the RCSD BoE candidates forum & generally agreed that candidates Josh Barouth, Camille Simmons & James Patterson stood out as education visionaries. (See attached video.)
6. Donna & Chojy also reported on the community forum on RCSD funding recommendations.
It was strongly agreed upon that Coalition members should, individually, use the RCSD website portal link to recommend key Coalition funding recommendations, but not as Coalition members. (See our funding recommendation attachment RCSD link for individual recommendations.)
7. Tom Hernandez & David Hursh will review Dan's letter, from our last meeting, for possibilities for local high education departments to support our Coalition's funding recommendations.
8. We discussed the NPE's charter school resolution, (text below.). We agreed that all Coalition members should review the proposal & inform Dan by Tuesday. 6/15, of your general support or not support for giving our organizational support for it.
9.. We also discussed Barry Swan's concern about the southern NY public Hassidic Jewish school district, which has been publicly reported on as not requiring a sound, basic education for its Jewish student population. We agreed to do some individual research on the issue & then decide if there should be Coalition action.
10. We agreed to meet again on Friday, June 25th at 3:30 pm.
Dear Dan,
It is time for an end to the federal Charter Schools Program (CSP). As Congress prepares the next budget, we need to let members know enough is enough. Send your email by clicking the button below. |
