19th WCA School Committee Meeting
November 1, 2022
7:00pm
The meeting was opened by Chair Dr. Phyllis Moss shortly after 7:00 p.m. on Zoom.
Present: John Boutet, Charlotte Giebel, Douglas Giebel, Lee Loomis, Dr. Phyllis Moss, Sarah Yaworsky
1. Spelling Bee Report
It was noted that Joan Cowles is still at School 16 and will be running the Spelling Bee there.
Doug has contacted Mary Hartman regarding money to be sent to scholarship winners. It will be reimbursed via the Community Association with grant money from Monroe County. The plan is to add 7th and 8th graders this year.
We intend to host a table at the 19th WCA convention on Friday, November 18 from 5:30-7:30. Sarah and John may be able to help the Giebels to publicize the Spelling Bee and seek volunteers.
2. School 10 Tutoring
Lee Loomis reported that he has had no response from the school regarding his efforts to set up tutoring to help the students. He hopes to tighten up communication soon between himself and the staff and narrow down a start date soon.
Charlotte will re-send her application to volunteer.
3. CET Meetings & Community Meetings
School 10 is having meetings, run by Michelle White. She shared statistics on attendance and 4th grade scores.
John Boutet attended the CET meeting at School 19 and spoke with principal Moniek Silas-Lee and the new Community Site Coordinator Yarritza Delgado.
Site coordinators:
School 16: Elise Ruise will be taking this job.
School 19: Yarritza Delgado has replaced Melody Bishop.
School 10: Michelle White
Wilson Foundation: Position was vacant
4. The Rochester Coalition for Public Education. Concern is being expressed about inadequate training for some school principals. Complex proposals are being made to address this. Particularly there is a need for new principals to fit in with community people. Other issues to be addressed are the emphasis on high stakes testing and local busing.
5. Action item:
Send emails to all site coordinators asking “What help do you need from us?” (It was mentioned that Wilson Foundation Academy requested help with their clothing closet and food cupboard. However, the committee agreed that this would be a way to get parents involved with the school and should come from the parent association rather than our Schools Committee. Our task is tutoring.)
RASE and RCSD are partnering to do an event on November 17 from 6 -8 p.m.
A suggestion for ways teachers could reach out to parents is to do group Zoom meetings.
The meeting adjourned at 8:04
Respectfully submitted,
Charlotte Giebel
