The Gandhi Institute is moving from the Uof R campus to Genesee St

One of our neighbors sent this to me - we hope some of our 19th Ward neighbors will be able to support this terrific organization when they move to our neighborhood and also take part in the youth activist movement. It sounds very good.

The Gandhi Institute is moving from the Uof R campus to Genesee St near Plymouth I think in the spring so they will really be a part of this neighborhood. I’m wondering what if anything the 19th ward or a few active streets could do to support them in their pursuit for nonviolence. If you read the newsletter, you will see the notice of the Youth Activist Movement” for kids 13-21. I’m wondering if there might be kids on this street who would like to or who would benefit from attending with perhaps encouragement from their parents. It is free. I attended their 6 wk session on non violent communication last year. It was terrific.

*Invite a young person aged 13-21, to participate in the Youth Activist Movement. Registration ends on January 20, 2012. If you know of young people interested in conflict resolution, leadership and nonviolence, this free program will be a terrific opportunity for them.

MOVEMENT!

The Youth Activist Movement is an initative of the 2012 Rochester Season for Nonviolence. From January 30- April 4, youth (13-21) from the city of Rochester and Monroe County will be given an opportunity to receive 25 hrs of professional training in nonviolence, conflict transformation, and leadership development.

The Youth Activist Movement includes:

Feb 4: Season for Nonviolence kick-off

Feb 19: Dr. Rev. James Lawson talk & film screening

Feb 23: The Foundation Movement hip hop concert

March 24: Paul Chappell nonviolence training

March 7-April 2: Robert Shetterly's nationally acclaimed Americans Who Tell the Truth

The institute is actually moving to South Plymouth (near Genesee)! Their building is being renovated now, so watch for major improvements there!

Laura, thanks for highlighting the Gandhi Institute's important work and upcoming move, and Joan for clarifying that it's to South Plymouth and not Genesee. We’re excited to be supporting the establishment of what we've come to call Gandhi House in our southwest Sector 4 community! The Institute will be relocating to a large old home on South Plymouth Avenue in the Plymouth-Exchange (PLEX) neighborhood. The house was acquired by my partner and me and is undergoing a complete restoration after having been abandoned and boarded for seventeen and a half years. Interior renovations are nearing completion, and the plan is for the Institute to move in during late March of this year; restoration of the exterior siding and the front porch will follow when warmer temperatures permit. The address is 929 South Plymouth Avenue, 5 doors south of Flint Street on the northwest side of Plymouth. It’s located on a ¾ acre parcel that extends from South Plymouth through to Seward Street, and is planned to include a permaculture garden for fruit and vegetable production- a multi-year project that is likely to include the engagement of neighbors, community groups and hopefully the nearby students at School #19 on Seward Street. We’ll be sure to follow up with more information when a moving date is set!
