Thanks for posting Livie's Import Market Bryan. Mark Sweetland and I went over to look at it and we were quite impressed. Mark took some notes and I took pictures:
Livie’s Import Market, 375 Chili Avenue at corner of Sherwood.
Owner: Livie Walker.
Hours: Open Mon-Sat 7 AM-7PM, Sun Noon-5 PM.
Specialty: Caribbean foods
Comments: In business 7 years this June. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner to eat in or take out. Parking in rear lot. Business is good now that boys left corner when camera was put up on Chili. Customers come from all over. People stop in when they move from “the islands” as store is well-known; participate in Caribbean festival and parade and won for best float. Sponsor a football team. Many neighborhood people stop in to pick up dinner instead of making it. Lunch crowd is business people, even from Xerox downtown.
Oxtails are the most popular with customers. Sides include ackee, callaloo, cowfoot, curry goat, and saltfish. Ice cream available: greatnut vanilla, cherry vanilla, rum raisin, Caribbean Stout, mango, coconut, soursop, Pistachio Greatnut. (OK, yes, I was impressed with this place – Mark S.)
The store is on the south side of Chili Avenue at the east corner with Sherwood.
The entrance is from the parking lot in back. As you enter the door you walk past the food counter over which is posted a very large menu of of available foods. You can purchase your food and eat in the dining area or take out. Click on the menu to read the selection and prices.
There is plenty of table space inside. Along the walls are shelves with specialty foods and spices. There are also picture displays of the soccer team they sponsor.
Mark talked at length with Thalia Walker about their operation. A plaque of a write-up the D&C did on them in March of 2006 hangs on the wall. You can click on the picture to read the article.
I'm going to have to try the ox tails.
