Anyone know what the new place, Count My Steps, next to Hollies on Brooks Ave is? I saw the sign in the window a week or so ago.
Also I was wondering if anyone knows what is going on with the old KFC on Chili?
"Count My Steps" I believe is a women's shoe store.
That would make sense :)
John DeMott, at Sector 4 Community Development, is an excellent source for what's going on with economic development in the Southwest. You can reach him at sector4cdc@yahoo.com
Thanks Marian! I will drop him an email.
Maybe John could be invite to join Location 19. he's a great community resource.
I have connected with John through email. He is very informative! Definitely a great asset!

Just saw in the front window of the old KFC, that El Latino is moving from Thurston Rd. It's great that they will have a larger place. But not so good to loose another business off Thurston.

Is this the 2nd or 3rd restaurant to move from Thurston recently?? It seems to me that Genesee Street is adding more businesses as is Chili. Thurston continues to deteriorate with vacant buildings, trash, drug dealing, etc....and bars that cater to the Friday/Saturday 'party' crowd. Too bad we didn't have a plan in place to get some of the 'stimulus' money!
Well from what Dana Miller wrote about in this post in January, Thurston Rd should be considered as "shovel ready" site. Dana said"...we have put Thurston into the City's REVIVE process which is a 4 step process to revitalize commercial streets. 1. Visioning, 2, Economic Ananlysis, 3. Design Charrette, 4. Implementation. Thurston has completed Steps 1-3, and we did have a design charrette in November of 2007."
But I have come to understand that the squeaky wheel gets the grease in this city of limited resources. And the 19th Ward, though we have many loud voices, are not singing the same tune. And all that the powers that be hear is babble. it's frustrating sometimes.

What a shame! I thought the site El Latino was in on Thurston added to the charm of the place, making it warm and friendly. I imagine they are also going to lose a lot of their walk-in customers who do not have transportation. The KFC location is a dump. I don't know if they are moving for a larger space or a lower rent, but I wish them well, in any case. Unfortunately, it is too bad to lose a wonderful business from Thurston.
