I would love to see a farmers market established in the 19th Ward. What do you all think? Maybe at Genesee Valley Park, or Aberdeen Square? What about creating a weekly public market style event on Thurston Road, where the street is closed to traffic (cross streets would remain open). Simular to Church Street in Burlington VT.

It's not a farmers' market per se, but check out Rochester Roots. And Luke Studola over on RocWiki seems to know something about an actual farmers' market. He apparently lives in Ant Hill.
The Farmer's Market at St. Monica's is great. I go whenever I can on Tuesdays, after 4 PM. Check it out.
Some info on the Westside Farmers' Market is available at http://rocwiki.org/Westside_Farmers%27_Market. This year, it's open until October 28 and it will probably re-open mid-June of 2009.
We patronized the Market regularly until we went on a sabbaical in July. (Look forward to being part of it next June) Got to know the folk producing the food - including some young people from the city (cant recall the organization) who were growing the vegetables and selling them. It is great to get locally produced fresh food both to sustain local agriculture and to reduce the carbon footprint of the food we eat.
Might above ground beds be possible in this or another area? It may increase the initial cost a bit it but also gets it a bit higher making it easier fro elders and people with disabilities to be part of the garden as well. AND there is no concern about toxins as the dirt is not from that site and can be secured from a known unpolluted site.
After manufacturing thermometers and other devices since 1851, Taylor Instrument Co. was sold and their factory at the corner of Ames St and West Ave was demolished a decade ago. The area is very much contaminated with mercury and other heavy metals/solvents. The site was paved over and a number of measuring wells were installed until someone takes responsibility for cleanup. Needless to say a garden would probably not be the most immediate best use.

The farmers market at St. Monica's was a good start, and with more promotion and support from the community could be a great opportunity for produce and goods in the neighborhood.
