I e'd CPO Kristin R to find out.
I was going to do that too, but was not sure if she would know. I'm wondering if it's related to Adam's "Major Announcement" he mentioned yesterday in the forums.
Drove by this afternoon- the place is boarded up with 'we're closed' signs yet the doors are open, lights on inside and a few people seem to be in/out (work men type). THe parking lot has 2 dumpsters in it and the lot is surrounded with yellow tape - looks like a cross between a crime scene and a construction scene. It's visually disgusting AND, what's with no information about this....???? Generally speaking, places of business don't just do this type of thing and/or stores that simply 'disappear' have somebody covering in terms of 'news......
in the meantime, as of 4:30 pm Thurston Road is filled with cars, traffic and lots of people hanging out.
Margy,

I feel like this is just another example of "for those in know". We have a bad habit of keeping information to ourselves, here in the 19th Ward. It's one of our major opportunities as a community. We need to work together, inform each other, and not be afraid to be reach out and ask for help.

Did anyone go in and ask what was going on? Or was it too boarded up? My impression was they were resurfacing the parking lot, the other day. I have no idea. Don Hanks is the community representative for Thurston Rd. for CDC, so he would be the one to ask. Are you aware of this? Just as John DeMott is for Genesee St.

Mark
Shawn, I agree that information in this community is sometimes very difficult to obtain for the 'average' citizen (meaning MOST of us) - for all of the talk about community and getting involved, citizens who want information, want to be part of a public process , etc don't have easy access to do this. Location19 seems to be the current BEST source of information in the 19th ward and that is due to YOUR single efforts to create a place for information sharing- thank you!

Mark, what does a 'community representative for Thurston Rd." do??
They visit the businesses on their respective main streets and work with them to get City grants for storefronts, for example. CDC I believe is community development (council?) John DeMott would have more information. They act as a liason between the business owners and the City, is my basic understanding. They keep in touch with business development, probably work with the merchant groups.
Hey ya'll.

I just ran buy the place and hour ago and it's completely boarded up and the plywood has been painted a beautiful institutional white.

I've gone to the corporate site and sent an email enquiring as to the status of that particular store. Hopefully they respond.

Anthony
Per David Hawkes, NSC, The corporate office decided to remove its franchise status. Don't know why. My guess is the management wasn't up to snuff....with the standards of 7/11.
I did not think that this location was a franchise. The property taxes are listed as being owned by Southland Corporation (AKA 7-Eleven). I'm not sure what is worst. Another empty building, or a 7-Eleven! Thurston Road needs city/federal investment. We are past the point where regular citizens are going to be able to do anything about the state of affairs there. We can organize to our hearts content, but we need help!
Yes, Shawn! We need a LOT of help. I am not a big fan of 7-11 stores, but it seems like a pretty BAD sign that we just lost one! Worse yet is that it *seems* that nobody knew this was happening - i.e. that one day- out of the clear blue- the store is boarded up, emptied out, signs taken down, etc. It's a symptom of a much larger Thurston Road problem- businesses come and go and come and go. Aside from a few 'key' places, there is absolutely NO stability. It sends a terrible message about our neighborhood and TO our neighborhood. It's depressing to say the least!
I don't like to echo bad news, but having just walked down Thurston today with very stark eyes, I couldn't help but feel depressed. It seems in just the two years we've been here it's become even more run down and desolate. I almost got the feeling as if it is quickly becoming another lower Genesee Street.
