Does anyone know what the "coming soon" sign means for the storefront on the corner of Brooks/Thurston?? It is the former home of Smitty's/Snuffy's and before that Louie's Sweet Shop. I recall that the city owned this property and was entertaining proposals for what type of business would go into that building.
Anyone have details??

I had noticed that work was happening at that location back in September, I remember asking Mark Sweetland if he knew about it. What he told me was that Holleys Food on Genesee Street was opening something there. But that is just hear say on my part. I remember seeing that property listed for sale on the City of Rochester's website, earlier last year. It sure is a great location. I'm very excited about the prospects!
I tried to talk James Brown (from James Brown's diner on Culver Road) into buying that place - he serves the best breakfast in Rochester!!
It would be great to have another local eatery in the 19th ward.
Thanks for the update!
Is Holley's a place where people can sit down and eat or take out or just catering?
I heard last night that Julius Cafe is closing at the end of January. They weren't getting enough business to keep their doors open.....
Their current location is take out, but I believe they are moving to Thurston so they can expand to a sit down place. Too bad about Julius Cafe. The food was good, but it seemed liked they lost their way when they started serving alcohol. Their original scope was to be a family, and young adult friendly place to gather and hangout. Lots of heart in the right place, but if you build it, does not mean they will come. Especially the youth hanging out on Thurston Rd.
Noticed today there are signs for "Opening Soon" all over the windows for the former Louie's. I believe it will be Holley's. Another promising note for Thurston ... there is now a sign on the storefront of the former Mulhern's Liquor Store, at Thurston and Enterprise, for what I believe says "Slim Googles Boutique." Don't know what that business is, but the site has been vacant for many years.

Whoops! It is Slim Goodies Boutique at the corner of Enterprise and Thurston. Don't really know what it is, though. And yes, Holley's is definitely opening soon at the corner of Brooks and Thurston, a great place. Their food is wonderful, we had it at an Urban Foodies meeting on the picnic benches at the office once. Great fish fry, wonderful ribs, chicken, and excellent desserts!
OH not Ice Cream! That is one of my down falls! LOL Seriously, Ice Cream is a great addition to the neighborhood. It's one of those businesses that attracts families, and gets folks out on the street. Sounds great! Now after all their hard working putting it together, we have the easy job! Going to eat :)
I can't wait! I remember the old Louie's Sweet Shop, where they had a counter where you could eat sandwiches and enjoy soda fountain drinks, including malted milk shakes or old favorites like root beer floats. Hopefully they will bring some of these back. And of course the traditional Holley's foods include great ribs, chicken, and fish fries! You can also get baked fish --- the possibilities are tremendous for an excellent neighborhood dining spot.
Oh no.... this isn't good - just when I was getting back to a decent weight again LOL!
